New member looking for first Disco

Hi,

I found this forum due to following a guy down the M1 in South Yorkshire this morning with 2 x disco3.co.uk stickers on the back of his car. If you thought I was staring at you, I didn't want a fight, I was just admiring your Disco Laughing

I am new to 4x4's and got my first one in Nov 2009, an Isuzu Trooper 2004. Unfortunately I killed this on 4th Jan, and now fancy a Disco to replace it. I am considering either a fully loaded very late (2004) Disco 2, or a very early (2004/05) Disco 3. Would welcome views on likely costs and benefits of going for the 3 over the 2. I think 3's look much nicer and it is a 3 that I really want, but I have a wife that is more realistic than me and likes the price of 2's better.

My criteria is that it must be an Auto, prefer leather trim and must have 7 seats. Do I need an SE for leather seats? Not too bothered about Sat Nav as I imagine my TomTom is probably better anyway.
A good stereo would be nice though. Anything else I should look out for?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Andy

Welcome Andy.

the D3 is a completely different car to the D2 so if you are after something a bit more "executive" the D3 is the choice.

to put it in perspective - i have a July 06 HSE with 105,000 miles and was quoted £15,000 if it was in A1 condition - for that you would get 6 speed auto with Command shift, full leather, premium ICE, 7 seats, cruise control, Sunroof, Rear aircon, cubby cool box, premium Satnav/4x4 info screen, and obviously air suspension.

I just had a "health check" done on mine and nothing of significance needs doing - just routine maintence.

I wouldnt worry about high mileage - just check the service history and you should be able to get a print off from the dealer that serviced the car to show what has been done.

all the best Thumbs Up

have had both, and both are great

and wish i had both now

the only downside to my d3 is a 'slight' Rolling Eyes fear when i venture offroad on more than forest tracks, if i had spent less on a better spec'd d2 i wouldnt have that worry to the same extent

if u have kids mine prefer the ride of the d3

hope that helps, happy shopping

Is this the first person ever to be brought to the site due to the almighty power of the disco3.co.uk sticker?

I thought there only use was so we could spot each others bad driving habits and report back on the site..... Embarassed

Oh and welcome to the forum.

D2 Vs. D3

Have had many of both (about 12 in total?) as company cars and now own my own 2007 D3.

If you can afford it have a D3 over a D2 any day, even if its a lower spec model (it will have more standard kit due to being newer/technology improvements in all likely hood anyway). Make sure it has cruise though. As you say leather is nice but I'm not missing it on my XS spec (first ever car without leather for about 10 years now....). Sat Nav is definately not missed and hundred quid TomTom much better and you gain the cubby hole storage in dash. Look for GS or XS spec for all the 'necessary' things you need. SE for leather and sat nav as standard, HSE has better sat nav and pretty pictures of the axles for off roading, xenons and glass roofs, etc.

Issues with D2 to me are that the trim is quite brittle and fragile, the front is quite cramped - even though it was my car I was always automatically trying to get the seat to go further back, always felt like I was sitting on top of the steering wheel. Also the second row is a bit cramped to get through the door - just look how short the bottom of the rear door is.

Later D2's have decent, forward facing 3rd row seats but not a patch on the D3 underfloor one's.

The D3 split boot lid is, in my opinion, more practical than the side hinged door on the D2.

Biggest thing though is the engine. The D2 is rough, loud and crap on fuel. I never got more than 25mpg however carefully I tried in my TD5's. Manual gearbox was awful to use but the auto was woeful and sooooooo slow with even further detriment to the consumption. In comparison the TDV6 of the D3 is a peach; it's quiet, smooth and the auto box is great. Manual box still a bit notchy but much better than D2.

Fuel consumption of the D3 I get 31mpg in an auto if I 'try', 28mpg generally if I use 'normally'. The manuals I was getting 2-3mpg more like-for-like usage.

Definately take the D3

Just to pick you up on this the GS is lower spec than the S, so I assume thats what you mean.

Welcome to the Forum Andy Thumbs Up

We have had a basic 5-seater since November 2005 and despite it being a lowly coil sprung version we're very pleased with it. So much so that we're about to take delivery of a D4 HSE to run in parallel with it.

Search for the best spec in your budget and then, before purchasing get it fully checked out by the dealer or better an independant specialist you can trust (several available on this forum Wink ). Also if you have a registration number at that point ask on here, you might find someone knows the history.

No matter which spec you get I'm sure you'll be please with it Thumbs Up
LRs are a fond memory, apart from the maintenance.

very good point from MRH check the vehicle properly, plenty of car check online for pennies, call DVLA free number they also hole the data base of plates on record and can tell you what they got including their website info regarding cloning

independent chap like Iain can tell you for a fee if car is worth buying and give a dealer proper hell checking all the equipment for proper operation like EPB low ratio box terrain response modes if equipped with
