Special Tools requred? Engine oil changed

Hi guys,

I was told that the new 5.0L V8 and 3.0L TDV6 need a special vacuum pump to suck out the engine oil instead of the traditional drain plug.

Is it true?

I just curious how we can perform overland trip with such complication...

It has been reported elsewhere on the forum that that the new 3 litre diesel motor has no sump plug and the oil has to be sucked out of a special tube, similar to the dipstick tube, although I think I also read that it has no dipstick. It wont make life any easier for those of us who like to do our own servicing!....

Could the sump not be altered to have a drain plug? Maybe not something you want to do to a brand new car, but:

remove sump
Drill 20mm hole
weld a nut on the outside
put a plug in it
refit sump


Obviously ground clearance and location would need to be checked to make sure its not going to get smacked off and that it will drain the sufficient amount of oil.

You can buy those pumps for about £60 - I have a sealey 9ltr one it makes changing the oil a peice of Censored

Have a look at this £47 a bargain

Looks simply enough for a DIY job, but if the engine does not have a dipstick shaft, wonders where this "sucker" equipment can still work as it may not be air tight to seal the air. Big Cry

Why can't the engine designer keep it simple like the good old days; let the gravity do the work!

It doesn't need to be air tight the it literally sucks the oil out - it would work if it was a bucket. The garage must use the same type of equipment - there must be a whole that you can put the tube down into the sump.

I can change my oil in under 10 minutes using this method, thats why I choose to change myself between services

There is no dip stick for manual checking this is done on the dash info. But i am sure that it srill has the sump plug fitted ( the jag has a plug and thats the same engine?)

Everyone should rest assured that the 3L TDV6 does have a sump plug. Oil can be removed either by suction or gravity. Your choice. This has been covered in an earlier thread in this very section of the site.......

Thanks winger, found that thread, very interesting including the debate about whether it was better to drain oil out the sump or suck it out. I remember as a lad many years ago helping my dad service his cars. I cant remember which one it was but one of them had a magnetic drain plug and it used to collect bits of swarf that had rested in the sump. Obviously manufacturing improvements now mean that with more precise tolerances and better filters there will be less (or at least smaller!) swarf, but I would still prefer to drain mine.
