I had a simlar doing yesterday night when my local UPS bloke rang me stuck in the village down the road from my garage, i proceded in the D4 on the way home to pull him up the hill.
At first it was just slip sliding about like a head less chicken but once it got its feet/tyres dug in it was away up the hill with the UPS truck on the back.
It was making some nice noises from the wheels or underneeth tho, that said all i did was hit low box and mud setting so it may have been me who did it wrong lol im used to a good old ARB locker and a mechanical centre diff.
Does yours have the rear locking diff ?

No it does n't it didn't do as well until I switched the DSC off then it came into its own even with the wife and three bin lids saying are we going to stay here all night Dad !!!
Outstanding, Really impressed Pete It must be even better with locking rear diff, XC 90 man might think better on his next purchase when he saw me driving up the hill where he got stuck coming down

Yes the std 19"'s to be honest it did very well considering the conditions.
The noises were a bit worrying tho but it may be just me not used to using the D3 or D4 like that before so a new herd noise was something that made me think what is that noise.

Watched an Xc70 struggle to get out of a parking place from the hotel next door, with much digging and pushing by the owner before it was free, swore not to get one, or an xc90! Jumped into our D3 embedded in 18" of snow and got her out no problem! Didn't offer Volvo dude a tow as he looked like he was enjoying the shovelling (it was a short handled shovel normally used for cleaning out the fire!!!).

Was watching him from the living room, didn't want to get cold, besides would have (and did later on) taken me 20 mins to desnow and deice the D3!! Problem with hounds is ice on the inside of the windows!!!
It's brought into context by a Pug 405 driver who totally cleared his car of snow, mostly with what looked like a large dish brush. No digging, no drama, just got his car warmed up and drove out of his snow hole!!! Shows you that knowing what you are doing counts max!! SWMBO & I were amazed, and robbed of our entertainment.
Hotel closed for couple of months so no more entertainment.
