Bonnet Latch

The nearside one (without the alarm connection) refuses to hold the bonnet down

I had one with the alarm sensor bit in stock, so I swapped it out, but it still won't latch

3 questions

Is there any adjustment apart from the latch itself?

Are they sided?

I think it's an el cheapo copy, do I need a genuine parts one?

Not sure if you've sorted this, but mine has the same issue periodically...

Open the bonnet and look down at the troublesome latch from directly above

You should see the wire running horizontally below the latch. The issue is probably the wire getting gunked up somewhere and not allowing the latch to return to open position to receive and secure the bonnet.

Use a screwdriver blade (from directly above) to push the wire down towards the floor about 1-2cm. Now try the bonnet again. Keep trying this until it works, if necessary squirt in some WD-40 too.

If it's the same issue as mine then this should sort it. It happens to mine every 6 months or so and takes 2 minutes to fix.

Might be better with a silicone lubricant rather than WD40. A bit of carb cleaner may also be useful for really gunged up bits

WD40 is oil based so will collect the crud and gunge again very quickly

Just push the cable down and and take them out with a torx driver, take them out, good clean with brake cleaner, oil and put them back in. There's about 1/4 " adjustment.

Lost count of how many years and how much oil of various types I have applied to and fiddled with the nearside one on my D4.
For a present to myself in December, I bought two new genuine latches.
At the weekend, when it was dryish. I swapped them out. Then followed an hour or so of minor adjustments to get them both working.
When I wandered away with the task completed, it was working. Fingers crossed next time the bonnet is opened it’s still the case.
