Hello.
I´m thinking to change my tyres for a off road set. Can somebody recomend someone ? I had a 18 rim.
I saw some posibilities:
Dunlop MT2 235/60
Pirelli scorpion AT 265/60
Grabber At2 255/55

I'm getting AT2's later this year, The current AT2's are slightly too small for the D3 18" rim. Talking to chaps on the General stand at Gaydon and a new size is being produced by the autumn to rectify this. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Hi Jaume, I just got a set of Cooper H/T Pluses fitted to my RR and they are the same sizes rims as the D3.
They are not quite full off roaders but I’m going off road tomorrow so I’ll let you know how the fair.
If they are any good, I’ll be fitting them to the wife’s D3 when it comes time to replace the Wranglers.

Hi again Jaume, I have just returned from the off road trip and I couldn’t be happier with the Coopers.
I have been running Purelli Scorpions for the last 8 months and half the time when our club went off road, I just didn’t bother to go on some of the tracks as I knew the tyres weren’t up to it.
On todays trip, we were on motor bike tracks and one of the bike stunts was to ride up a continuous grade increasing slope.
We had one D3, two D2s, two D1s and a fender. All but the D3 and my RR were running nobblies and my RR got the highest up the slope, only by a nose but on another rough hill climb, the RR was the only one to get through with very little sliding side wards compered to all the others, with one of the D1s not being able to get up the hill at all, because of continual lose of traction.
These Coopers may or may not be for you but I am very impressed and so far they are also proving to be extremely quiet on road.
Mind you, only time will tell how good, or bad, these tyres are.

I've had grabber AT2's on 18 inch rims for the last 6 months. Very good tyre, excellent off road grip goes without saying, but also very good on road in the wet and snow (what little we had this winter). The wear seems very good too, much better than the standard fit pirelli scorpions and they are just as quiet on the road too. Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE

hello djheaton321, need some more info on AT2, as i am considering
those too.. are they really quiet as the pirelli ??? and what abt the handling
and general behavior on tarmac, compared to pirelli ???

On the 18" wheels, they have exactly the same profile as the 19" Pirellis, so they are slightly smaller in diameter, by about 3%. They are just as quiet as the Pirellis and they handle well on the road too, in fact they are a lot better in the wet than the Pirellis (the tread pattern means they disperse standing water a lot better). They also wear a lot better than the Pirellis. Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE

I've wasted several hours searching tinternet for 19" O/R tyres. Agree with Slimer, nothing out there other than MTR's.
As I know that I'd never be bothered or have the time to change wheels, I have thought about running 18" wheels & put the 19"s back on when I sell it.
On road, is there really a noticable difference between 18" & 19" wheels? On a performance car I'd appreciate less tyre roll etc. but on a D3!
I know some here have switched from 17"& 18" to 19" did you notice a big improvement with on road handling?

I run 18" in the winter and off road, 19" in the summer. No difference at all. Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE

dj what 18" tyres do you have & how good are they on-road? 99% of my mileage is on-road, but I do go off-road virtually every weekend.
In an ideal world, I'd have a set of 17" or 18" wheels & fit them on Fri. night & swap them back again on Sun. night. Reality is sadly different!
BTW approx. how long does it take to swap a set of wheels around? I'd guess at least an hour.

They are 255/55R18, General Grabber AT2. They have the same sidewall height as the 19 inch standard fit tyres (they are also 255/55). This means that the circumference is 3% less than the standard fit, ie your speedo will over read by another 3%. I have been very pleased with them, they are quiet, comfortable, handle well on the road in wet and dry (in fact a lot better than the General Grabbers that come as standard on the Defender XS, I don't trust them in the wet). Where they surprised me most was the way they handled a snow covered road, it may as well have been dry tarmac the grip was that good. Off road, they have only got stranded once, when it was very muddy and the tread clogged up, mind you even the guys with modded defenders and big mud tyres were struggling on that day. About an hour to change all the wheels over is a fair guess, I have a quick lift trolley jack and an air compressor with impact wrench, so it takes me just under half an hour, including doing all the pressures. It was a worthwhile investment given that the defender also has two sets of wheels! Discovery 3 TDV6 HSE
