Steering "knock"

Received this today from my dealer, he has ordered the part.

Models: LA - Discovery 3
LS - Range Rover Sport
Title: FAQ 22241 - Steering light knock over bumps.
Engineer Name: Townsend, Ken
Last Modified: 24-APR-06
Category: Chassis
Symptom: 303000 Steering/Handling
Content: User will report light knock over bumps. Some will show slight free play in steering.
Cause is LOWER steering shaft (Under bonnet) NOT the steering rack.
With vehicle static engine off check for free play in steering aprox +/- 3 degrees, with gentle input.
Also some vehicles may exhibit a light knock on uneven surfaces between 10 to 15 mph.
If the shaft is the cause please use new part number QMN500240 (RHD) or QMN500250 (LHD) to repair as this has improved characteristics for noise. Part was introduced to production at L319 - LA390436
L320 - LS956379. If shaft does not resolve knocking noise please submit an EPQR and contact dealer technical support.

This may als help, as there is also a TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) for the dealers which outlines what they need to check and replace if necessary details as follows: -

TSB LA211-002
Subject/Concern: Discovery 3/LR3 - Minor Steering Column Knock
Models:
Discovery 3 / LR3 Vin range: 5A300545-5A349378

Markets: All
Section: 211-04

Summary:
A customer may report a concern of a minor knocking noise from the front end of the vehicle (steering) when driving over small bumps or undulating/rough road surfaces.

Cause: Dynamic movement in the lower steering shaft sliding joint due to low sliding loads.
Action: Should a customer express concern regarding the above, refer to the Service Procedure detailed in this bulletin to determine the source of the noise/excess movement.

Just spoken to my dealer about exactly this problem, plus the fact that the middle seat in the 2nd row is very difficult to lock down flat, and even worse to release back up (pulling on the release strap)

Is this a safety issue or more of an annoyance? I too have very light steering knock. I barely notice it most of the time.

Me too. Only noticeable on gravel roads or cobbles at slowish speeds.

Booked in this weekend. Thanks for the info.

G'day,

I bought the same thing to my dealer over here in Oz and was told that was how it is meant to be, to have that in terms of going off road. On road there is nothing at all. I also notice though if that I switch on TR it seems to firm up the feel at the wheel. Would be interested to know if the "knock" really is meant to be there and for exactly what reason,

Regards

Shocked I find that hard to believe, did he explain why it is supposed to have a knock when off-road. Sounds like dealer 'bovine dung' to me.

Steveo

my one has it as well - started to notice it at about 2,500 km and getting worse although it remains intermittent. As the TSB says, slowish speeds and it is worse in off road height than on road. Is it normal or acceptable in an $ 80,000 car - IMO no - and LR Australia will have it on the list for warrenty issues for the first service.

Hey again,

Went offroad yesterday and put the D3 through its paces with some reasonablly challenging stuff ie steep jutted rock climbs etc and didnt notice the knock at all. However on my driveway which is about 200 metres long and a combo of tar and concrete ( goats track really) that is where I really notice it. I will get my dealer to email me with what it is meant to be and let you all know, otherwise have a great day Laughing

Been having a growing problem with the steering knock, especially at low speed. Checked with the dealer (MLR) and notified them of the comments and TSB on the forum. They took the car for two days to check it out, and then fitted the new lower steering arm, and hey presto! the knock has gone. Now feels and sounds like it probably should have in the first place. Very pleased with the result. Laughing
Why have I never felt this way about a 4WD before?
