Surround cameras - one month in

Well, I've had my D4 for a month now and can honestly say, if you're looking to get surround cameras I would spend your money on something else if I were you.
The standalone reversing camera is superb. The other cameras, after a couple of days of showing them off to people I now haven't used them for a fortnight.
You have Junction view. This isn't really a junction view as the lenses are flush on the front of the car so can't see any more than you can and they give a distorted view.
Kerb view, this is ok but again gives a distorted view which is out of proportion to the rest of your views. Crossing a tricky mountain pass with an inch to spare either side might work but for day to day what is the point.
Trailer view is about the best but how often does the average driver need to see his rig on a day to day journey. If you're that worried, stop the car, put it in reverse and have a look on the reversing camera.
Land Rover have to supply these cameras as standard by law in Japan so to subsidise the cost the offer them in other countries as an option.
We have a second D4 coming soon and we quickly deleted surround cameras from our order with a day or two to spare.

As for the rest of the D4....................................fantastic!

Really... a couple of days Sad I'd have thought you could have shown them off for years - they certainly sound impressive!

Do you think you would use them more 'off road' though, rather than town driving?

You may use them off road but as the image is distorted I wouldn't trust them. On the kerb view you don't get a view of the wheels, just a snap shot of a small area of the side of the vehicle.

Thanks for the info slots.
If it's not too much trouble, do you think you could post a couple of pic's, eg kerb, junction examples?
Cheers

It's a bit tricky as I'm in Nice and my car is back in Wales. If you can wait until I'm back at the end of next week I'll gladly post some. Anyone living in wales can have a live demo and a coffee if they like!

Do your cameras go off after 11mph because i read in the LR handbook that they do but in ours they never turn off at any speed.

Cameras stay on at all speeds on ours. But totally agree that they are a gimmicky gadget rather than a life enhancing extra. They actually make you realise just how good your mirrors really are !

I used them on the D4 I had for a couple of days and can see how the application could be very useful off-road ...I don't think you could say for one minute that they replace the need to get out and check with your own eyes...but once you've done that they would be beneficial in executing manoeuvres.

United States

We were talking about the surround cams on a RRS forum here in the US. When the pre-launch press releases came out for the 2010's back in April, the surround camera system was described as showing "images electronically manipulated to provide an undistorted view", so I was expecting something similar to Infiniti's "Around View Monitor" system, as seen on this demo video: - That's a very cool "bird's eye view" camera system for anyone, especially the parallel parking-challenged, IMHO. Still gimmicky, but useful.

When I saw the Land Rover implementation I was very disappointed as well, as the images look distorted and are definitely not "electronically manipulated". It's almost as if Land Rover had better plans for the camera system but scrapped them at the last minute. Perhaps the cameras could be of some use when off roading, but they certainly look gimmicky and not very useful otherwise.

Slots, do you think the junction view would be any good for people that live in houses on blind bends? You know the ones with a mirror in the drive?
