Tried to open the tailgate today. I think that maybe I tried to open it at the same time as I pressed the keyfob button (In a hurry!) The tailgate opened a notch but no more, tried key fob and also pushing tailgate closed to try again but then only getting the noise from the solenoid... result... the damn thing wont open at all now.
Tried pushing both lock and unlock buttons to no avail.
I've read some of the threads about removing trim to get at the actuator, but what I really need is an idiots guide of what to do or try next.
Having spent some time fixing the sun roof leak (again) on Saturday and Miss KA failing to stop and hitting the back end of a Skoda yesterday (One day after renewing insurance with her first years no claims bonus) I'm feeling a little delicate.

I've had a look at that... Do I assume it's the actuator that's gone? Do I buy one before I strip the trim off? And I don't like butter... will a marg knife do As you slide down the banister of life

I have a few tips and pictures to add to the instructions though to make it easier. You can never have too much info when attempting to do something like this IMO
So here goes:
1. Forget butter knives. I bent mine straight away and all I managed to do is rip the carpet off the panel I was trying to pop out. Use flat blade screwdrivers instead. You need to exert a bit of force to get it to pop out, but once the first bit is out it gets easier. Don't worry it won't break.
2. Once I got access to the actuator housing and pushed the cover aside, I found it was virtually impossible to get my fingers in there to pull out the loose cable. Use a piece of stiff wire and fashion a hook on the end (see picture) and simply hook out the cable enough for you to grab on to it with a long nose pier. No skin off my hands, easy peasy.
3. The rest was a piece of cake.

That's what you're after. Note the black plastic lid covering the actuator that you need to push aside can been seen. It is clipped onto the cable, but screwed down by 2 screws on the other end.

This will save you a lot of skin and time. Use it to hook out the loose cable.

yo!
when my boot refused to open a week or 2 ago lra came out and fixed it by removing the push button out of the boot handle then spraying the switch/actuator in the door with wd40
voila it opened
said its a weak point in the boot and water and dirt gets in
sorted
maybe not your prob but mines sorted
dunc life is tooooo short.enjoy the moment.dont worry be happy

Not sure how you would remove the "push button" in handle without the tailgate being open?

Did you ever get the bottom of this, I've got the same issue - looks like he tailgate would need to be open before getting access.
My actuator seems to be functioning ok, tried the manual release but no joy
I've got he trim loose on the back and tried pulling cable but no joy there either, MOT tomorrow, I'm assuming this isn't part of the check?
