Cooper ST tyres and Discovery 3 |
|
Since fitting these tyres I have staked 3 side walls, had three go flat with grass and mud in the beads and another flat today (for a yet to be discovered reason). It is getting embarrassing when the vehicle is unstoppable but the tyres fail. I had Cooper At's on my Challenger without a problem. I have experimented with tyre pressures between 35 and 50 lbs but it seems to make no difference. Any ideas? 05 Discovery 3 SE TDV6 Chawton White with roof rails, driving lights, steel side protection rails. Rego: DISCO3

Can't speak for the STs but I run the STTs at standard pressures with no problems. Now they have a few thousand miles on them and have bedded in the grip is great The End

I've got the STT's too and have had no problems.
I've heard about some manufacturing issues with ST's, so maybe you should contact Coopers or do a search at www.aulro.com; there's been a fair bit written in various threads there. Have a nice day!

Discovery343,
I had the Cooper ST's on my D3 for about 15,000km but now have STT's.
I've never staked one or had one go flat yet. I've done some serious off-roading with them on. Cooper recently replaced them due to tread blocks cracking. The sidewalls had a few cuts but nothing that would be a problem.
I ran them at 26PSI when off roading and 33PSI front and 36-40PSI rear when around town or travelling up to the bush.
If you're pushing dirt into the beads then you must be running them at very low pressures (like < 20PSI) even though you mention 35 to 50 PSI. Is your tyre guage right?
BTW Coopers seem to be pretty good for puncture resistance compared to other brands (4WD Monthly did a test on the ST's lat last year). I don't read too many complaints about punctures but for tread quality that is a different story.

Discovery343,
Ive just got back from a Perth to Alice Springs trip including the Great Central Road and Mereenie Loop road. About 3000ks dirt and 4000ks bitumen with Cooper ST fitted. I did a side wall near the tread on the Meerenie loop road on the rear right. It looks like a sharp rock sliced through the side wall, tyre had only done about 5k at this stage. I was running about 34 PSI in the rear as i was towing a 1.5 t camper. All the tyres look okay but given they have only done about 10k they do look well worn - more so than i would expect. My brother was running Cooper ATRs and his look better and he had no problems at all - also not towing and lighter loaded in a Navara. Not sure that I will go to Coopers at all on the next set

What size Cooper STT is best suited to 17" wheels on disco 3 tdv6. I am looking to replace the 18" LR wheels with 17" BB6 Performance wheels. Was thinking of Cooper ST but after comments mayby STT is better.
LET RIP WITH YOUR IDEAS.
Rob.

Cooper ST tyres and Discovery 3 |
|
Hi guys.
New to the forum, and what a great site it is. Been a huge source of valuable info for me. I have searched this site and googled, but can't seem to find a definitive answer on cooper STT tyres on the 18" rims that come with the SE spec D3. Are any available and do they fit without issue e.g. no cutting etc. ?
I know that it is probably better to go the 17" route, but really don't feel like splashing out on new rims so soon 8)
Hope to get some good action gallery shots in shortly

Thanks catweasel ... that WAS before the drugs
Have got some articles on the web about the grabber AT2 tyres .. seems like that is going to be the best compromise I'm going to get. Initially planned to go with the Cooper STT 275/65 on a 16" rim ... but seems that 16" steel rim is not an option on the D3
Now to see if I can find a supplier here in South Africa for the grabber ... ! What do you mean it won't go there ?
