Go to start the car this morning & battery totally flat. Put it on charge to get it started, then took it on a 20 mile trip. Came home & put the battery back on charge to boost it. It's been on charge for 4 hours, go to check it now & the dash is lit with a warning message, "battery very low start engine". This is whilst it's still on charge. Hi pko, if your battery is still low, having the battery charger on it, while it maybe charging the battery, the battery charger will be doing so with a voltage not much higher than the battery’s actual state of charge.
To see what the voltage is, with the battery charger connected and on, measure the voltage at the battery terminals.
If the voltage is still low, 12.0 or less ( not sure what the error voltage level is for your D4 ) then this is most likely why the error message is being displayed.
If the voltage reading is higher than 13.0 volts then there is more than likely an additional problem, but this could just be the need for a system reset of some form.
So having the battery charger on your cranking battery won’t necessarily correct the error reading and it also does not rule out the possibility of a stuffed battery. 2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7

drivesafe, thanks for that. Sorry for the delay in replying but I've been away for a few weeks. When I got round to taking the car to a dealer, they couldn't find a fault, but since then all has been fine. I think they disconnected the batt. so perhaps that re set something. Anyway so far all is good.
