That looks stunning Martin Thumbs Up

I have to say that I think the 19" wheels sit much better on the D4 than the 20" Whistle

looking good - I like the full length rails.

Daft question - are they functional or just cosmetic ? I assume they're functional and you need them for the canoes ?

I jolly well hope they're functional - though I do think they look pretty 8) anyway...

The slots run to just behind the front 'foot' so it should allow me to get the boat a couple of feet further forward, reducing the rear overhang somewhat. Just have to rig something to make sure I don't scratch the top of the boot lid when loading - may see if I can get one of the rollers you see on the back of builders vans!

Cost of full length rails? Are they extenders or instead of the normal length.

They're full length and replace the standard rails. PM Nick (The Large One) for latest forum price, mine were supplied and fitted as part of the deal so hard to say what they cost...

Martin,

Have you looked at www.Kari-tek.co.uk. They have an excellent system for loading kayaks onto high sided vehicles ???

I'd be interested to know how you get on with the extended rails as the rear overhang with pucker sea kayaks is too much.

The cross bars need to be further forward to balance the kayaks correctly without causing any damage.

Have you also thought of putting a hydro glide (thule) on the rear bars to help with the loading of the canadian??

Loading the boats is pretty easy. I've got 135cm cross bars (instead of the standard 120s) to leave room for j-bars on each end. The kayaks then just lift straight onto the j-bars (OK, it helps that I'm 6 foot for that bit!) while the canoe loads from the back, with the j-bars acting as guides to stop it sliding off either side. The kari-tek stuff looks neat, but I suspect that loading the canoe would actually be harder than with my set up - it certainly won't be a one man job - and then there's the small matter of lifting 60-70 kg of boats in one hit...

The only problem with having the bars further forward is going to be that I won't be able to rest the boat on the back bar and the ground - hence looking at one of the rollers you see on the back of builders' vans for loading up 8x4 sheets.

Martin.
