I don't think you'd see it without removing the heat shield.

Any idea on expected symptoms after failure he asks, thinking about the fact that somehow the transmission takeup doesn't always seem as smooth as it should!

I suppose, at worst, a driver shaft failure. I suspect that you'd here some rattling first.
Gearbox smoothness, or lack of, sounds more like a calibration issue.

Calibration? On a gearbox? Can you expand on this?
Observations
- slowing into a roundabout, then accelerating (not foot to the floor, just gentle): sometimes feel a bit of a 'clunk' as it takes up the slack
- engaging cruise when slowing leads to a momentary surge, e.g. coming into average speed camera zone, ease off from 70 well in advance, no brakes, just engaging cruise as it drops to the posted limit. D3 didn't do this, nor did D4 loaner I had while my D4 was in the shop (and behaving itself!)
First one I've only noticed the last couple of days, second has been happening for a while (but not, of course, when it was back in to the dealers for tinting!)
Any suggestions on what I can point the dealer at gratefully received!
Cheers,
Martin

Not something for internet diagnosis. Talk to the dealer.
