Buying Engine Oil

I've searched through the old topics, but I'd appreciate an up to date view.
Who uses what oil in their TDV6. It seems Land Rover's own 5/30 oil is good value, is this only available from a dealer?
Castrol Magnatex seems to be the most easily obtainable 5/30.
Am I right in believing the oil used is fully synthetic not semi?
Many thanks.

Hi,
Had my TDV6 since Sept 05 and done about 6k miles, I'd been monitoring the oil level regularly and a few weeks back I deceided it was time to call back at the dealer to let them top up the oil as they suggested I should during the hand-over in Sept.

Anyway the workshop was closed when I called but I was presented (free of charge) with a new 1L container of Shell Helix F 5W-30 Fully Synthetic. Attached was a label with brief instructions on checking / topping up. They now give these with each new vehicle at han-over to save the return visit(s).

Mine neaded a litre of oil after approx 3k miles, so I called at the dealer to get it topped up. Cost me just under £7 and since then I have not needed anymore. My first D3 (rejected after about 10 months of ownership) needed a litre of oil after 1k miles but from then until 7k when it was replaced it did not need anymore.

I think it's a dealer initiative - I've been very pleased with them over the past 4 years.

I had problems with cold starting on a DII purchased in March 02 which they did an excellent deal to replace with a DIIa after 12-months which I replaced with the D3 last Sept.

Service has always been excellent

Unless anyone has a better suggestion, I'll buy the Castrol Magnatec 5/30 from Halfrauds £26.99 for 4.5L.

I use it in all my business vehicles and the D3.
I run a Renault Master which has a 3 litre Nissan Engine. It has 24000 mile service intervals and consumes about 6 litres of oil between services. I was told that the engine uses this amount of oil to maintain a quantity of fresh oil in the sump at all times.
As for the D3, I topped it up with 0.5 litre at 4000 miles and nothing since (now 6000 miles recorded).

Anyone else find it almost impossible to read the TDV6 dipstick?

Mine is so badly smeared I've little idea how much is in the beast. It's like the plastic bit is too tight a fit for the available space.

I also find it difficult.

I've not needed any oil in 10,500 miles and am getting a bit paranoid about the levels, but every time I check it seems fine. The smearing doesn't help at all though.

Hi Guys
I also have difficlty in reading the dip stick, done 14k miles since July 05 and added approx 2.5L of Halfords 5/30 as per the spec in the book.
Did you know that you can take your own oil into the dealer when your having serviced?

Is anyone changing their oil completely before the 15,000 interval. Our D3 is at 28,500 miles and the oil looks as "black as your hat" and as "thick as tar". I rang the dealer to ask if I should change the oil early and he said, "no need to do so, Landrover know what they are doing and if they say the oil is good for 15,000 miles, then it is". As I guess we wont be keeping the vehicle much beyond 50,000 miles, any excess wear due to poor oil wont become apparent by then. However, bearing in mind the chap who will be running this one way beyond 100k miles, should I change it now ?

I'm changing mine every 7500 miles, engine does seem to run smoother after a change

As you're not far off the 30k service you may as well wait till then but get and oil and filter change done at 37.5k too and see if you notice a difference

Be aware that some dealers will charge for an expensive synthetic oil at normal service by default. (My dealer charged £85 for oil alone)

You can specify that they should use standard Land Rover approved and branded oil (green bottle 5w 30 recommended for TDV6) and it will save you nearly £50.

If your car is on a 3 yr lease like mine, there is no point in filling it with expensive oil. If it blows up on Land Rover branded and recommended oil, I guess they will not question your choice of oil will they?

I use Mobil 1 Diesel 5W-40; this is fully synthetic oil.

I purchase it in France were it is much cheaper than in the UK.
It cost me last year in a Hypermarket the equivalent of £21-36p for each 5 litre can. Note that in the UK its normally sold in 4 litre cans not 5, and these cost £34+. Mobile makes their synthetic oils for Europe in France.

Have done this now for more than a decade, initially for my 200 and 300 Tdi Defender 110s as I consider this the best oil I can buy. As I tow a heavy caravan for about 50% of the vehicles use it seems to be logical to choose oil with superior high temperature stability. Never had any oil related issues, both Defenders I took to 60K miles before trading. Dealer has been fully supportive.
I know that another LR service centre uses a Mobil semi-synthetic, not the fully synthetic Mobil 1, from bulk in Diesel Disco 3s.

Just a comment on the semi-synthetic. As I understand the technology there is no way semi-synthetic should go unchanged for 15,000 miles.
