Autobox problem

Hello everybody

Well after 7 months of trouble free motoring the autobox can't decide on what gear to be in and so after many changes it goes into limp home mode. Restarting the engine solved the problem but took it main dealer for check. They find the fault codes and reset the software but don't seem to know what the cause is and mention the ecu and a software glitch. After 2 more occurences it was booked into the main dealer again and after a day in the workshop the manager suggests a double flush of the gear box oil might solve the problem (yes might). But as this isnt covered by the warranty they want £467.

So have any of you auto owners out there encountered this problem and know of a solution. The vehicle has just turned 3 years and done 36000 miles.

thanks

I have not had it done. I expressed my displeasure and the manager was going to investigate the warranty situation. They are not sure yet if the double flush will even solve the problem. I feel it is a gearbox problem and that is covered by the warranty

Ashcrofts of Luton may be able to throw light on the problem. I had two replacement exchange Freelander Td4 Auto boxes from Land Rover. The second was very little better than the first, which was not of merchandisable quality. I bitterly regretted not having gone straight to Ashcrofts for a replacement. Both 'new' LR Jatco Td4 boxes 'skipped' violently between some gears straight off the ramp. To the best of my knowledge Disco 3 ZF gearboxes start the same way as those in Merc 'M' class, Touaregs, X5's etc. in terms of vital workings, and would say incomparibly better quality to boxes of previous generations. At any rate, Ashcrofts are a good source of comfort, if anyone can be.

This may help....
I don't think it is a oil issue

Thanks for the help guys. The fact that the gearbox works perfectly inbetween this occasional glitch and works perfectly after switching the engine on and off suggests it is a software problem. The fact that the main dealer workshop have gone from software to ECU and now to double flush suggests they don't really know what the problem is. I am also surprised that the repair is not covered by the landrover warranty. I am now waiting for todays instalment of the land rover experience...

If you had it for 7 months and bought it from a Land Rover dealer, wouldn't it have a minimum 12 month warranty regardless of whether the new car warranty has run out ?.

It still has 5 months of a land rover warranty but the dealer is saying that the double flush isn't covered. I am about to ring them again to find out current status.

Transmission is though. If it needs a double flush to fix the problem then that should be covered. Ring LRCC and make loud noises. Rolling Eyes

I had a valve pack replace to fix a harsh shift between 2nd and 1st. Since this change the amount of clunking has reduced but not gone.

My petrol based 4.4 v8 lr3 developed a clunk when pulling out of cold start , when transmission shifts from first to 2 nd gear at 1250 rpm something clunks it use to appear before upshift at 1750rpm but know is at 1250.Also the loudest clunk happens in the morning after nights rest but it seams to be almost undetectable when warms op I can feel it under gas pedal in the footwell somewhere it presisly sounds like some kind a cable is banging against a piece of metal and it only appears after start up when shifting ,it does not happen when moving from street lights or any other place , initially clunks only ones at pulling off at any start up.Does anyone can chime in what this might be related to?

There's the rub. It's still in warranty. They should fix it under warranty. You don't care if it's a double flush or a replacement flux capacitor; their issue, their cost, not yours. If the double flush isn't covered, insist on a new gearbox under warranty instead. Dr. Ian Malcolm:
"Yeah, but your scientists were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn't stop to think if they should."
Transgenic tomato anyone?

Ask your dealer if they have carried out their investigatory work in conjunction with the 'ZF Trouble Shooting Guide JLR 13 38 10_2E' ?

This offers them specific guidance with actions for all known reported gearbox issues.
