load and speed rating for D3 tyres
Hi all.
Just looking at tyres for the future replacement of the OEM Goodyear Wranglers and on chatting to a Coopers salesman about the new ATRs which are specifically being marketed at the new Pajero AND D3 he said that the D3 was one of only 3 vehicles (in Australia others being the Hilux and I think Navara) that not only lists a weight rating for the tyres (112 in D3s case) but also a axle load rating. This axle rating when divided by two allows tyres with a different weight rating to be legally fitted. So in the D3s case a rating of 104 (I think) which they increase to 108 for safety margin can be fitted!
The placard on the drivers door states that a minimum trye rating of 1030Kg or load index of 109 is required.
The new ATRs are load index of 110.
any comments?
Also, the placard mentions a minimum speed rating of "H" (=210Kmh) for tyres (original Wranglers being 112 = 240Kmh). The ATRs are only a 'T" (=190Kmh).
Any thoughts on this?
The quoted price is A$418/tyre
regards
Peter

Hi Peter,
The Yokohama Geolandars I have on also have a load rating of 110. The wheels have a rating of about 950kg? Hmm..

The maximum legal road speed in Australia is now 130km/h in NT, and 110km/h in all other states. The maximum speed of the TDV6 auto D3 is 185km/h (IIRC), so this means you will be safe - when you take your D3 on the track! Bwa ha ha!

Jonesy,
The speed rating is NOT related to road speed limits! It is the limit the tyre can safely be spun at without causing excess stress/heat etc and causing damage.

The reality is, 240 kmhr speed rating and all terrain don’t go together, its one or the other.
190 kmhr rating is more than fine with a diesel D3.Trust me, what could go wrong?

Peter,
I never said it was... only (in jest - hence emoticons!) that you could never get to the safe rating of the tyre you mentioned -as the D3 can't go that fast! and also that it was illegal to go that fast - unless you were on a track.
I take it you have read the RTA link I sent in the second reply? They are the facts. The top of page 4 states:
"Tyre load rating
Any replacement tyre must have a load rating equal to or better than the rating of the original tyres fitted by the
vehicle manufacturer. This information is available from the tyre placard or the vehicle manufacturer."
The top of page 5 states:
"Tyre speed rating
If the speed rating of the tyres specified for your vehicle is less than 140km/h you must not fit tyres with a lower
speed rating." It also mentions about a speed warning label required to be fitted. I find this requirement amusing and redundant, per my initial comments.
Cheers,
Rob

Jonesy,
So the Coopers are legal for load rating BUT NOT for speed as the placard states "H" (210Kmh) and the tyre is only a "T" (190Kmh) rating.regards

Not quite - they are legal - if you get a tyre warning label installed by the tyre fitter. That is shown on page 5.
Cheers,
Rob
Edit- this is what the warning label must say:
WARNING
This vehicle is fitted
with tyres which
have a lower speed
rating than that
specified on the tyre
placard.
RTA VSI No. 9
This is the physical description of the label:
"The label must be at least 40mm x 40mm
in size, made of durable material, with not
less than 2mm high black lettering on an
orange coloured background."
There are also guidelines for where the label must be installed on the windscreen. Some decent tyre installers would have them in stock. Most couldn't be bothered! IMHO, it is a load of nonsense - but it is the law in NSW.

I've read in some technical literature (but can't remember where) that the speed rating is the speed at which the tyre lasts at least 10 minutes (at certain ambient temp, some equation on how max load is reduced, etc). I'm not sure that I'd want to drive at a speed anywhere near the maximum rated speed of my tyres. I suspect the V8 may very well be able to attain 190 km/hr, but it'd probably empty both of my fuel tanks within the 10 minutes, so the tyres would still be intact .
All this said, I'm about to put on 18" Cooper HT+ with a "T" speed rating. I'm interested to find out of an orange sticker is needed here in WA.Jim Dowell - D4 HSE TDi, 12,000 hydraulic winch & hidden winch mount, MTRs, TyreDog, Traxide 2 x aux battery system, fixed air compressor, Dolium roof rack, MitchHitch.

All this variation in road rules between the states is a horses . QLD and NSW tyres allowed max 15mm increase in diameter from 763mm to 778mm wlile QLD allows 26mm decrease in dia and NSW has 15mm decrease. QLD also saya that as the maximum speed limit in the state is 110kph tyres only have to be N speed rated.

The legal minimum load rating is 109 as on the label. At least this is the case for my MY06 TDV6 SE.
The speed rating is nothing to do with the actual sustained speed the tyre can run at.
This indicates the maximum speed that the tyre can sustain for a ten minute endurance without coming to pieces and destroying itself, your car, the car next to you and anyone else within a suitable radius at the time. http://www.carbibles.com/tyre_bible.html06 TDV6 SE with many LR and after-market extras. Used only on weekends and trips out west.

Thanks DT for the link to the tyre bible, I found it interesting reading especially the bit about tyre pressure and nitrogen.
Yes it's 109 on my car as well.
On my own trundlebus I wouldn't go below LR recommended tyre load ratings, my latest purchase of six Bridgestone D694 LT265/65/R17 are rated at 116 (1250kg) and "S" (180kph) speed. Yes the "S" speed rating is down from LR's "H" (210kph) but still legal. There was an extra bit on the placard on the door about, if fitting an off-road tyre the car is not driven at speed in excess of speed symbol molded onto the trye.
