I generally like to carry a spare key somewhere on the car, however I am having trouble finding a magnet based key holder big enough for the D3 key, any suggestions

You should be able to locate a D3 key blank, probably with a chip (which is useless).
I got the locksmith to cut off most of the plastic tag, and I carry the spare in my wallet. You could attach to the underside of the vehicle, but my experience is unless its strapped on, it will be lost.
I actually hide a spare FULL fob in the vehicle.
You gain entry via the LHD door key access, grab the fob from its hiding place and shut the bl**dy alarm off !!

I read that a certain Ford blank can be cut (it doesn't have the electronics with it) and you could secrete that somewhere outside or in your wallet and keep the spare electronic key INSIDE the vehicle.
Then as gps-au says, open the LH passenger door with the copied key and then locate and start the vehicle with the electronic key.

I've something called a HitchSafe, which is a combination safe which fits into the hitch (but not when pulling a trailer). It's a good way to keep the key safe when on, or in, the beach and has a plastic cover which camoflauges the fact that it's holding something. The D3 key just fits in it, but not with any other keys on a ring.
