Rear parking sensors - ever been caught out ?

The D3 is the second car I have owned with parking sensors. My last car (a jag) was infallable in this department and nothing would catch them out i.e they detected everything from lamp posts at all angles / low walls / cats darting out at the last minute etc etc.

I was wondering if anyone has ever had the mis fortune to find out the hardway if the D3 sensors miss anything.

(...and yes don't forget to use that somewhat old fashioned technology - the "i-Ball" Laughing )

I have been caught out, as in....once washed if you dont wipe the sensor they think something is there when it could be water droplets.
 D4 HSE....Probably, but not quite decided yet.

Never - or at least, not yet.

If anything, I find they give quite a generous amount of leeway between "full beep" and the space left. Plus I find the D3 one of the easiest vehicles I have ever owned to manouver in tight places due to it's squared-off shape.
 The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Club "yes, I too have had the EGR's replaced..."
Club "yes, I too have had the compressor replaced..."
Club "yes, I too once had the car at the dealer for a couple of weeks nearly 4 weeks over 4 weeks...5 weeks"
Club "yes, I too have had EPB failure..."
Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."

A single horizontal bar just below the sensor level running across the rear of a parking spot.... I was watching it thinking "I'll get the beeps in a sec"...nothing... I chickened out in the end and when I got out to look I was 6" off it..not a peep from the sensors... that's the only time mind you.

Not yet but I only ever treat these as Park assist sensors and rely on I-ball if not sure. I also agree its a doodle to park the square shape, good vis to front, the rear bumper is 6 inches longer than the back window but most of all the brilliant lock. Its easier to park safely than much smaller cars.
A thread a long time ago mentioned one thing. Wait for the beep to tell you they are on before moving as someone went backwards into a concrete bollard as he didn't wait for system to be active after selecting reverse. I believe that was very expensive to fix.

And don't forget to manually reactivate the system if you manually switched it off. It will stay off even when you select reverse untill you switch it back on or turn off the ignition.

This would be the only time I very nearly got caught out, actually.

My 2 left hand rears are knackered so I need to be extra carefull - but having the mirors flick down when reversing is a massive help

did you include the space the towbar takes?

Guys there is TSB for rear parking sensors on 2005 or older cars - Mine had an intermitent problem they didn't engage for some reason - you would know as you wouldn't get the beep when selecting reverse.

My Control Unit was changed after the dealer practically called me liar and said they had been testing it for a whole day - I replicated the problem in less than 10 minutes on his £60k FFRR and asked if he wanted me to carry on reversing needless to say he fixed it after that

No...but the only time the tow bar is on is when I have something attached to it (Maxxraxx, Thule back-up box...), so the sensors are disabled.

Embarassed I didn't realise the sensors are being disabled on connecting something.
But I still suspect the amount of space is so generous so you'd be able to leave the tow bar on (nothing connected) and not crash into other cars/walls/etc.
