Low Coolant Level Message But Level Ok

After travelling a distance I am getting a Low Coolant Level appearing on the LCD message centre on switching off the engine. On restarting the engine the Low Coolant Level message is once again displayed. The temperature gauge is midway position where it should be. On checking the coolant level it is at the upper level of the cold fill range where it should be (level is much the same hot or cold). On driving the vehicle the temperature gauge is midway position where it should be. If the vehicle is left to cool down and then restarted the Low Coolant Level message is not displayed on starting the vehicle.

Where is the sensor located on a 06 SE?

If the sensor it is built into coolant bottle how easy is it to replace the bottle?

Is there a risk of coolant leakage if not fixed?

Yup, the ball absorbs coolant, looses it's boyancy and sinks.

Thanks.

I assume there are no complications in replacing the tank, just a simple matter of disconnecting the hoses and tank fixings and replacing it (i.e. nothing else needs to be removed to get at it).

Also is normal practice just to reuse the hose clips or should they also be replaced?

If it is just due to the ball absorbing coolant then am I correct in assuming that there is no immediate need to get it sorted (i.e. no risk of leakage)?

I had this issue with my 1st D3, the tanks were on back order as they were in such a demand. So I carried on using the car with the warning showing for quite some time. Then one day I drove from home to a site in London when I arrived there was coolant all down the side of the car. A new engine was required.
In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Was that caused by the sinking ball blocking the hole, so to speak? Effectively blocking the expansion tank?
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Ok - it is best to replace ASAP as there is a risk that the ball may block the expansion tank.

Is there any complications in replacing the tank, is it just a simple matter of disconnecting the hoses and tank fixings and replacing it (i.e. nothing else needs to be removed to get at it).

Seems to be a lot of these failing lately.

Just had mine done. New tank costs about £56. Probably easy enough to fit but mine was in having a service so got the garage to do it

Hi All

You can now buy the sensor only £3.61 + vat , I purchased and fitted to bottle and while test driving to check for any leaks the low coolant message came on !!! Censored
Stopped car checked and level ok . Mad

LOOKS LIKE NEW BOTTLE NEEDED ALWAYS ( Dealer told me they only replace the sensors under warranty not the bottle) Big Cry

Hope this helps anyone with this fault.

Mine has started to come on about 50% of the time and will stay on for the journey.

Keep checking level and its okay

Do you have a part number for the tank and sensor ?

And is it as simple as it should be to replace ?

Thanks
