Snow Chains Melbourne

Hi guys!

heading to the snow in a couple of weeks. To save time, I would like to arrange the snow chains prior departure.

Does anyone know where I can hire chains around Melbourne? Preferably in the eastern suburbs. I'm looking 255/55/19

I made an inquiry with Roof Carrier System (RCS) in Camberwell but no reply.

cheers~

Andy

Not sure about 19" rims, but you may find that aftermarket snow chains won't fit your wheels, ie. the inside distance between the front strut and tyre is very small, and won't allow the chains to pass without hitting the strut.

If you follow the forum, you will notice this is a real problem with OEM rims and rubber.

If you have the clearance, just buy a set from Autobahn, etc , mine only cost $160.
Trust me, what could go wrong?

Hi razzle~

$160 sounds like a good deal! Can you give me more details on the product? such as brand and etc.

I never had to fit a chain before so no idea what to look out for.

I think they where $50 dollars a day to hire or $160 to buy from Autobahn.

Because you can adjust the fitting, they will fit a wide range of tyre sizes. I think my ones will fit tyres ranging from 17" to 19".

They have a inner steel wire ring which clips together, and then you lay the steel chains over the tread, then you have a length of chain which you tension to a grab point, and then a rubber strap with hook, which you tension and hook into the outside chain.

But just be aware that the inner wire ring may be to wide and hit the strut.

LR specify that you must only use genuine LR chains, but they allegedly cost $1600. They also say that they are to be fitted to the front wheels only.

The snow chains box have detailed photo's that show you how to fit them, the first time is a bit of a battle, but it is easy after that, just have a practice at home before you go.
