After more than 2 years of owning my D3 I have finally detango'd.
I popped the headlight in the oven for 3mins on 90c but found the sealant wasn't soft enough to be able to separate the parts so put it back in again for another 3 minutes.
First one took about 40mins to complete. The second about 20mins.
I'm not sure whether i'll leave them with no amber at all or, if I'll put the amber side strips back in.

Definitely thinking of doing mine also one of these weekends.
I would also like to add angels eyes like KrioK shows in his pics here. Anyone has an idea which ones to use best? I found a couple of 120mm rings on ebay, but not sure about the size/quality, or where/how to connect them best to?

I have now done this, and I felt that to get the result I wanted was very time consuming and very easy to mess up! I figured I was suitably qualified having modified loads of stuff in the past, built a kit car, and renovated a house etc But I would not have begun had I fully appreciated the process.

Opening takes ages with a heat gun. Eventually you get there, cutting away some glue with a knife blade. Use the clear knobby bits on the curved side of the light to lever open. DO NOT TOUCH ANY CHROME PARTS. Finger prints transfer instantly, and the chrome is an atom thick. You can improve the look of finger prints with your breath and kitchen roll only. And you only get 1 go at doing it. I used some panel wipe on the bit behind the reflector and it all came off immediately. I ended up print sticking tin foil to cover this, as you could see the reflective layer was missing. As for the reflectors - you really need to keep a slither because 1 it looks better and 2 mechanically the fixing in the light are expecting this thickness. Cue hours with a Dremel and file. This is what I cut off:
As for trying it without and reflectors and then going back - forget it. This takes an eternity unless you Are either very skilled or cavalier. Choose and do it once. Note: when Puting the lights back together start with the curved side with the clear knobby bits. As you work it shut on the other side the top or bottom of the black plastic has a little cut away. This is the corner you close last to avoid swearing.
I have Disco 4 rear lights with the ballast resistors but the indicators still blink rapidly. So a job in the week is to wiring more ballast resistors...

Hey guys , don't want to rub it in ...but over here we don't even have to heat them up just leave the car in the sun for a few hours ,take out the lights and open them up

Well, After reading through Verydisco's 'how to' on detangoing, I thought I'd give it a go. I was going to opt for the oven method, but after offering the light unit up I couldn't get it into the oven without it fouling the side racks, so it was plan B with the heat gun.
As Verydisco said, slowly does it and after a while enough heat was retained and the light units came apart without too much drama.
I opted to leave the reflective strip in, and cut this away from the main orange lens, and then filing the cut edges smooth.
Lights were reassembled and fitted with Hids4u 3156 92 LED bulbs and resistors. These LED's are amazing!!!
So, a couple of before and after shots. New bonnet decals fitted, and now just deciding what grille mod or replacement grille to go for.
Thanks again to Verydisco for the how to, and thanks to all you brave souls who carried out the mod and offered 'tweaks' to the original 'how to'.

If that comment is about my car, Thank you.
I will do a how to at somepoint during this week.
Although if you view my car diary and look at the last 5 pages there is a sort of how to do them.
I would strongly suggest that anyone wanting to do the mod that I have, should buy a spare set of headlights as you need a few days to allow the paint to harden properly.

As a keen DIY'er I decided to give this a go.
Can I first of all congratulate the many others before me who appeared to make this a straightforward job 8)
I found this one of the trickiest and most frustrating jobs I have ever done - took me five hours straight, and I used both the oven AND my DeWalt heat gun.
Getting the headlights out was the start of my problems as one of the bottom holes refused to yield from the button and pop off, the other light came off no problem.
Out of the oven and the black glue - which is like industrial tar by the way - would not give an inch. To cap it all, despite following the instructions to the letter and timing the 'bake' to the second, I melted a clear lug...
The lens or lugs were unshiftable, so then came the heat gun, and it took me almost half an hour to persuade the light to come apart. Black glue dripping all over it was not pleasant
Imagine my disappointment after finally removing the Tango piece to find the indicator reflector pitted and scarred - not a happy bunny
I found putting the whole lot back together even worse than getting it apart - and without the heat gun it would have been nigh on impossible
I love messing about with my cars - but the prospect of repeating the whole procedure on the next light was not one I was relishing It was exactly the same, except no melted lug I managed to reshape that with the heat gun and a wooden spatula, and finally got the lights in place with the grille back on after five hours exactly.
Pleased with the result, and I greased the slides that release the lights while they were out.
Damaged reflector:
I've obviously had a tough time of this relatively straightforward mod, don't let it put you off, just be aware it's not always gona go as smoothly as you hope 8)
