looks to me like it might be keeping crap away from the spare, maybe heat from the exhaust?
you also need one of rays special plates for that wheel, stop it getting nicked...

It's a heat shield between the exhaust and the spare tyre ...you should be able to get it replaced under warranty 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I wouldn't bother until you have a full sized spare or you'll just do it again fairly rapidly. Not that it will stop it getting damaged but less easily. 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

I also think taking it off wouldn't be good for the spare tyre.
Mine is a bit shorter by now but most is still there. I would replace it if it gets loose. Roel

Been Laning all weekend so just crawled under a very muddy D3!
Brushed as much mud of the spare (full size) as I could and it all looks no sign of heat damage. There is quite a gap between tyre & exhaust.
Mine has been off for about 2 months.

Being a space saver spare the guard sticks ou more.
Anyway, I don't think anyone would want to nick it. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
