Tyre feathering/noise - what new tyres? and advice on care?

After approximately 36,000KM I noticed a constant "whirring/whining" road noise, noticeable on a smooth highway road, in particular when travelling over 60KM/h

On closer inspection, I noticed the tyres - particularly the rear tyres are feathered on the inside edge. Unfortunately I had not monitored the wear over time and the tyres have been rotated at service intervals.

The dealer "lent" me a set of rims and tyres for a test ride, and the noise was gone - which clearly eliminated any other causes.

Now the decision - live with the noise as the tyres still have a deal of wear to go - or replace. If I do replace - is there a better tyre than the Wranglers - and if so what is the recommended care - how often should alignment be checked?

I guess you havn't had a set of Mud Terrain tyres then. Wink
If you swap them diagonally the noise will be worse for a while ( 10,000 + kms) then wear back even if you are lucky!
I'd put up with the noise or buy another set and sell the others on ebay! At least you would get something back for them.
Either way I'd get a 4 wheel alignment done.

Big Cry I think because they would have been rotated at service intervals, all have been affected to a degree - I have had alignment done at the dealer - I guess that where the Harmon Kardon sound system comes in to drown the noise out - Do mud terrain tyres make a lot of noise?

When new they are not too bad, once they get down to under 50% they can start to Howl!
At that point of time sell em & get a new set! Better off road when over 50% tread.
