Hello All.
I first posted on here a couple of months ago when I started looking for a D3 HSE, unfortunately my plans went on hold when I was made redundant for the 3rd time in 4 and 1/2 years.
I'm sort of back on track, but my budget has dropped to under £20K, and I've had plenty of time to read the forums and gather information about what to look for when viewing cars, particularly as I'm now going to be looking for a slightly older vehicle. This site is a great source of info, and I thank you all for that.
One thing I've noticed is how many are dissapointed with the real world mpg they are getting from their TDV6, and I'm wondering what real world figures people are getting from the 4.4 V8 petrol.
As my annual milage has plumeted recently I may even consider one for the shear buzz of having that V8 burbling away.

It all boils down to economics (including a value put on the burble  ), cost of purchase. I must admit that long rund on soft sandy beaches really tests the flow capacity of the fuel pump  . Range is an issue here in Oz, but may not apply to you. Also of note there's no worry about turbo failure, oil in brake system and a few other foibles the diesel has (how odd that the Jaguar-based V8 is simpler and probably more reliable than a diesel). You are in luck as I watch my economy like a hawk.
With city-only driving I get about 15 MPG (mine is US spec)
With mixed driving (city/highway) I get about 18 mpg
On the highway at a steady 75mph I get around 20 mpg
The most I have ever gotten was a 300 mile stretch in Spain going about 60 with the cruise set and it was 25.5 mpg

I purchased my V8 (MY 2005) last december and have driven just over 10.000 kms so far.
Depending on use, I'm between 6 km/l and 7,5. On average I'm at 6.8 km/l which converts to about 19 mpg (uk gallons) or 16 mpg (us gallon).  there's actually *two* kinds of gallons???
This is a calculated number, the trip computer will give a better result but it's just wrong (by about 10%). The V8 is sensitive to driving style. At 180 km/h, mileage is about 1 km/l 
Just to make the story complete: I drive about 30,000 km anually and even with the fuel price in our country, I'm not even thinking about trading in for a diesel!

We've done about 24K miles in 17 months in our V8 HSE. Though we live in Noo Yawk City, most of those miles have been highway, cruising at about 60mph.
The gauge often shows 24 (US) mpg, but it actually works out closer to 21 when measured fill-to-fill .... that would give about 25mpg in UK speak. Very little city driving, fortunately - though I have to say we have no problem whatsoever with NYC taxis when driving the LR3.
I do like the V8 (only game in town for the LR3 here - though the 4L V6 was available for a few years) - touch wood, no problems aside from a couple of exhaust manifold bolts shearing off (I suspect an incident when the dealer was searching for an exhaust rattle, which is still there, but I digress .....).

Thanks for all your replies.
I've put a little spreadsheet together based on the following.
Using current prices where Petrol has come up closer to Diesel prices.
TDV6 26mpg Diesel price £1.03/l
V8 18mpg petrol price £0.99/l
At 8,000 miles a year the additional cost of Petrol is £562.49 per year
At 10,000 miles a year the additional cost of Petrol is £703.11 per year
At 12,000 miles a year the additional cost of Petrol is £843.73 per year
At 14,000 miles a year the additional cost of Petrol is £984.36 per year
I know its a snapshot, and not real world as fuel prices change, but it shows how much cheaper the V8 car would need to be purchased for to make economic sense over say 3 years of ownership.

I actually drove 24000 km since I bought it in september. Mine is a G4 so with roofrack etc. and I drive a lot through Germany. The problem is that the V8 is fast, it drives good fast and in Germany you are allowed to drive fast. So my average fuel consumption is a bit lower then Wiljo's.
You could off-course put a LPG installation in, then you have the best off the 2 worlds. I am considering it but didn't make a decision yet. The installation would almost have been paid for now.  Roel

Roel is right.
The V8 experience is something you cannot describe.
The immense power going through the drivetrain when you press the pedal, the feel of being catapulted as if you're in a jet plane, the smooth cruise and the music it makes when you push it... it all adds to the V8 feeling.
Fuel prices are a bit different in our country, I think at the moment the difference between petrol and diesel is 20 to 25 eurocents. At 25 €cent difference petrol would cost me € 1,500 more per annum. And I'm well prepared to pay that (and more) in return for the V8 vibe!!!

So, put in the cost of an LPG conversion at about £2500 then reduce the V8 running cost by a minimum of 40%. I reckon it makes even more sense then.

After owning a diesel Renault 19 when I was younger I promised myself I would never own another diesel 
You can do the math until your bored but at the end of the day I think personal choice comes into it. I'm aware that running a V8 will cost more (and I do about 20000miles a year) but it's a premium that I am prepared to pay!
All my mates comment on how nice it sounds wafting around and for me with lots of motorway mileage I like the relaxed sound of the V8 whilst cruising.
I did try out the diesel before I brought mine and I was impressed - there is nothing wrong with it at all - BUT I am a V8 man! Club V8

Just a thought on the LPG side of it.
The (Government???_) has only agreed not to increase the duty only to 2011.
You just know whats going to happen dont you! All things shipping, storage, transport. UK and worldwide.

Nobody makes promises but LPG is cleaner then petrol and Diesel so the tax should stay low(er). Roel

Roel you are obviously used to an honest and hard working Government as opposed to the thieves and liars that stalk the corridors of power in my once great nation.
Come 2011 you will see a progressive increase in LPG to the point where the conversion will take years to pay off.
I bet you 5 Euros!
