Decided to get my surf board wet this weekend just gone, so put on the roof bars for the first time. Strapped on the board and all was well until I tried to open the tailgate.
It transpires that the roof rails are just below the height of the high level rear brake light when the tailgate is open which is b****Y annoying, which means the door catches on the board when it opens, prising it upwards.
Next time I'll need to put something under the board to lift it a little. I can't put the board far enough forwards to clear the tailgate when it's open as it's 9'4" and would leave half of it unsupported at the front.. Not a particularly stunning bit of design me thinks.

you both need to upgrade to the new longer style roof rails that come further forward as this would solve the problem by either enabling you to put the setups slightly further forward or put a 3rd cross bar in to do the job properly.
Come to think of it you could even buy a set of roof bars between you to give yourselves the 3rd bar if your really keen

You mean the roof rails continue on the part of the roof above the driver's seat?

the new style extended rails continue across the lower roof area but at the higher roof level, so the level is the same from rear of roof to top of windscreen area

The new style surely are a better overall solution. Just curious how it looks like.
For my kayaks though, I prefer to have them in the back of the car because I use the back wheel to stand on during (un)loading.
The paddles I can easily move forwards a bit, enough to solve the problem with the back door. Just the first time, when throwing open the back lid, of course there was a collision.Some people get by
