Turbo Hose

The experience of Discovery continues to be enlightening.... (2 Months so far....)... Still smiling though.

Recently noticed black smoke under heavy acceleration, been getting worse.

Took it into LR Dealer today for another job,asked them to have a quick peep, they said there was a non specific turbo fault code, cleared it down didnt come back, keep an eye on it.

Coming up the M1 tonight it was like a james bond car every time we went above 2000rpm. Nursed it home.

Called LR Assist (for the first time), who send out local oik, who despite having no concept of customer serivce took a look and in 5 mins spotted a 2" split in the rubber turbo hose (the one you can see when you open the bonnet).

Question is for all those who know these things is would a split in that hose cause over fueling and hence the plumes of black smoke. Is there likely to be any other damage ?

It is worth noting that the acceleration on kick down is something ive always thought was a bit on the weak side, always put it down to the weight, and the fuel consumption is a tad on the low side.

To be fair to LR Assist they were fab, they are sending out technician in the morning to fix, hopefully (a guy from Huntingdon).

Any comments.

General Note :- When I had a BMW525d it had 2 replacement turbos before 30000miles.

Update :- Remember I said LR Assist were fab... my blind optimism caught me out.

The LR assist man turned up on Sunday morning, and said "Whats the problem then ?" I asked that as he was here to fix it I hoped he knew what it was !!! Turns out he'd just been sent out..... Did nt have the parts of course. Why exactly did they send him out ?????

Then the saga continues, the replacement car, it seems on the extended warranties there is no like for like, only what AVIS have, nearest depot was Luton Airport, they had no cars at all, and even so couldnt guarantee a car that could fit 3 child seats !.... BAWLOCKS to that.

Then as the item is possibly not covered by warranty (knowing the Land Rover Warranty probably not, choclate tea pots spring to mind) they can do anything !!! Its fair to say I went loopy loo....

In the end LR Assist are getting the part, and will come back to fit it, and I will probably have to pay for the part, which I dont mind actually, Just hope the part is availiable next day, so we can get it done on Wednesday !!

NOTE :- It is the hose from the intercooler to the engine that is split, so turbo hose is slightly misleading !

Good thing we didnt take the TinTent away this weekend ! But SWMBO has had me gardening....

Big Question is, Is the light covering of oil on the plastic engine cover evidence of anything more serious ????

Hose split very common, symptoms are lots of black smoke & no power. The smoke is caused by a loss of boost presure (thus less air than usual into the engine, thus the fuel mixture is too rich).
A small amount of oil is also normal, so renew the hose & all should be well

Is there an optimal age/mileage to be checking these turbo hoses, bearing in mind rubber hoses will always perish?

At what point would it be sensible to routinely replace them to avoid problems etc?
 I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

they normally delaminate from the inside 1st, and unable to spot till the split protudes the outside, been there Big Cry Not a major issue though, 10min fix

Is the oil coming from the split hose, or the oil filler cap? There can quite often be a bit of oil residue in the intercooler hoses, if its from the oil filler cap, I'd try replacing the seal in the cap if poss before becoming concerned about excessive crankcase pressure etc.

Oil is from the hose split, its not much really, given how much volume and pressure of air is passing.

Assuming its the original part its 69000mile, and nearly 5years old.
 Got our Disco... Love it.....

Interestingly they seem to just split & not delaminate much (a bit like the older freelander ones). early 2005 models with about 100,000 miles on them are an ideal candidate.

I've not had a close look at them to see how and where the turbo/intercooler/inlet pipes run, but would it be worth getting some silicone hoses to replace the rubber bits Question

All I can say is that your car must have been abused. I have never opened the bonnet ("hood" for our LR3 friends) of a D3 and seen an engine bay in such a neglected state as the photos you posted above. There are no excuses for a 2005 car. If the engine looked like this, you would have no problem finding the fault:

All fixed, feels like a new car !!!

Thanks to nick @ Yeovil, even with carriage was considerably cheaper and quicker than local stealer.

Took LR Assist 5 mins to fit !
