Brake Pads Again- when to replace ?
Hi,
Just had a service done at 39500 & have got a report from the dealer that the front brake pads are at 4mm and the Rear pads at 3mm , they gave me a part request sheet with the prices of new pads & sensors. But this is the thing I don't like with this dealer, is you don't get to talk to a mechanic to get things explained , only a front counter boffin who really doesn't know much. I asked if this was enough to last through to the next service or if it was something that was urgent to do now & only got a vague response & it may last etc , but I gather it wasn't urgent otherwise thay should have done them at the service (or rung me for the OK).
So can anyone tell me at what wear do the pads need replacing ?
Also at what point do the sensors cut in to tell you to replace them ?
Quoted $138 front pads $115 for rear pads $42 front sensor & $29 rear sensor - then plus fitting - does this sound reasonable or can you buy the pads elsewhere for better pricing?

You won't need new sensors unless the pad wear warning light has come on and it doesn't sound has though it has so that's one thing to cross off that list Now an ex-D3 owner after 7 happy years. Miss the car but not the big bills

You should change the pads at 3mm, the rears will probably have the sensor come on pretty soon. TBH, i'd just change them myself (and I'm not a mechanic!) as they're pretty easy with a few basic tools. Bodsys Brake Bible

Hi George, i recently replaced the pads AND disc rotors on my D3 HSE V8 - i think they are bigger rotors on the V8 than the TDV6. But I digress. The all up cost for 4 rotors and pads for 4 corners was $796. as my sensor alarms hadn't yet gone off, they didn't need replacing. It was an easy job if you approach it methodically. You'll need a #50 TORX bit to release the rotors if you're replacing them. the rest is conventional tooling.
I am down in Albany occassionally. maybe spot you.

Sounds like I will have to get them done soon then, though it sounds like a good idea to have a look behind the wheels to see if I can fit them myself as suggested.
Do the dealers prices sound OK ? or is there anywhere else to buy the Pads from?

Replace them NOW. I waited for warning light, never came on.
15.000 miles and had to replace front & back pads. ALSO HAD TO REPLACE FRONT & BACK DISKS .

I replaced my pads and rotors a couple of weeks ago before I picked up the new D3, cost was $360 for the rotors and $135 for the 2 sets of pads.
The rotors came from Discovery Autos and the pads from Marfleet (TRW brand)

Ferodo make pads for the D3 in their "4wd" range. Does anyone know if they are the same as OEM? Anyone tried the TRW pads? Both around $80 a pair.TDV6 D3 HSE

I would advise against non-genuine, as they tend to squeal which is annoying. I just paid $249 for the full set (genuine LR) from a a LR specialist (but not a LR dealer). So the cost you have been quoted for the parts only seems OK.
I would definately fit them yourself. I did it on Monday nioght from 6 to 10 after work. You will not need replacement discs at your milage, and if your are careful and have not seen the pad replacement light (and hence no contact of the sensor) it is highly likely that you will not need to replaced the sensors.
The job will take about 3-4 hours when you muck about like a novice (ie, me), my only caution would be to keep an eye on the brake fluid level. You will need to push the pistons back into the calipers (any g clamp or similiar will do the job) but naturally this pushes brake fluid back if the dealer has diligently topped up the fluid when the pads are low.

Spoke to Ferodo importer today. Disco3 pads are only sold in their Premier Range and not 4wd. He said they were almost identical to OEM. Interestingly, he said under some European law, the pads must be at least 90% + of OEM spec. Their website has some reference to 90%?
Think I will give these ago although I'm having trouble getting a price. Repco just quoted me $400 for the front pads. I told him that must be wrong but he stood by it!! I believe they are about $85 for front but not sure about the rear. Will update the forum once I firm up the price.TDV6 D3 HSE

If your sensors are still OK be carefull with pulling them off the brake pads.
You have to pull them off straight and DO NOT move them side to side to get them moving as that will break some small parts off and them you have to replace them anyway.
If the pads were to 2.5 to 3 mm the sensors might come on. so that will be the minimum.Roel
