Spare key?
Can anyone help with the most economical way of getting hold of a spare key? The D3 I've bought has come without one.
It went with the car to a BMW dealer, who then shipped it out to BCA auctions; the car then went to two other traders pretty quickly before I got it. BCA won't discuss it with me, and I'm at the mercy of the chap I dealt with to chase up the previous dealer. Not holding my breath now he's got his money ...
Having had a near-miss with a huge key bill for my XC90 I'm keen to avoid a repeat experience!

"official route" speak to Nick at Yeovil LR (aka The Large One) for special DISCO3 price, will still need dealer to enable it AFAIK.

Unfortunatelyyou need the car, the key, and the workshop ids all in the same place to code so you would have to take to a dealer for activationTLO has left the building.......

Yes, I sent him a letter resulting in the trail leading to the BMW dealer.
TLO, many thanks. I'll give it some time and a couple more calls to see if the dealer can sort it out, but I'm not holding my breath!

I believe companies like boomarang insure your keys for a tenner if you were to lose one in the future?wink wink!! s/s side protection bars, s/s front bumper protector, rear DVD's, Ebony leathered up, harmon ipod dock, remapped & still draining my wallet!!!

Ermmm, that's insurance fraud, so I'll steer clear of that! Dealer got back to me yesrday saying he'll be in contact with the other dealer on Tuesday, so fingers crossed...

My Mrs has just lost her key fob today. If I end up getting a replacement is it a case of getting a new one which matches the one you've already got or should I/can you reprogram the one I have remaining as well.
I'm just thinking she may have lost it locally and someone might find it and try their luck with land rovers on our estate and get lucky with mine! Wondering whether I should be taking extra steps rather than just ordering a replacement.Badda bing.......How you doin'?

Well, just got the first stage of a replacement done today as I need to get a move on getting it sorted. Had to provide log book and two other forms of ID before they even order the key. That was £100, and needs a second trip to the dealer with the car to get it programmed, so prbably another £50 minimum I reckon..
It may well be you can get the dealer to do a complete reprogramme to negate the risk of your key turning up in the wrong hands.

ISTR The dealer will only activate the keys that are present when you take it in. So by definition, you won't have the lost key, so it will be de-activated automatically Bodsys Brake Bible

Interestingly, we have just been looking into adding Key programming to our Faultmate equipment.
Fairly simple and cut and dried really, and it should be possible with any proper dedicated system, however, that's not really the point of my adding this post here. What i really wanted to add was that the first step for either dealer IDS equipment (or ours in fact) is to erase all existing keys, before learning or re learning new or existing ones.
By that i mean, i have 2 keys for my D3, if i re learn just one, then the second key does not work.
If i re learn 2, one of which is original and one which is completely new, the second original does not work.
If i re learn all 3 then all 3 work.
I do however also have keys in my possession from scrap cars etc that refuse to be learnt. I do not yet know why this is, but its a steep learning curve of which i am familiar.
so ultimately if you get a new key through TLO and have a dealer learn your existing key, plus the new one, you will definitely be safe in respect of the second original being erased.
