Hi all,
I noticed on my D3 that the pads are getting down to sensor level, I rang my L/R Specialist and asked about Genuine vs Aftermarket.
1 - Go Genuine
2 - Change Rotors at the same time!
3 - At Sensor level their is still 20 % pad life left, drive through the sensors for a month or so before replacing the Lot!
4 - Price $1100 fitted.
Is this the way to go?
They had said they have done a few D3's and found that just changing the pads can lead to pulsating pedal a week after the change.
Thought I would ask the other "Experts" 2005 TDV6 HSE Silver, LLAMS Height Controller, Tinted Glass, Onroad - 19" GG AT's, Offroad - 18" 275/65 MT, Traxside Dual Battery kit, Rasta Protection Plate, Alpine Roof, BAS Remap, ARB Air Compressor, eDiff Custom Drawer and storage unit -http://www.box.com/s/jem0ilac3cner2mexq64 UHF CB, 4x4 Intellegence RWC, 120ltr Long range tank, Rock Sliders and Compressor protection plate Beanie grill, De Tango.

I just bought the D3, just coming up to 80,000kms so you would probably think it would be the second set.
Yes that price was for all corners Pads & Rotors. 2005 TDV6 HSE Silver, LLAMS Height Controller, Tinted Glass, Onroad - 19" GG AT's, Offroad - 18" 275/65 MT, Traxside Dual Battery kit, Rasta Protection Plate, Alpine Roof, BAS Remap, ARB Air Compressor, eDiff Custom Drawer and storage unit -http://www.box.com/s/jem0ilac3cner2mexq64 UHF CB, 4x4 Intellegence RWC, 120ltr Long range tank, Rock Sliders and Compressor protection plate Beanie grill, De Tango.

Replace all pads and rotors . Some wait until end of second replacement pads , but the discs are too soft
IMO to last .

I priced the after market ones (DAB) they were more than the OEMs.
Price quoted seems a little high. Ask them to do better or get another quote. Alto did my front pads and discs and rear pads for a lot less than taking the discs off your price.
Opps, meant rear pads-edited. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

I spoke to the guys at Alto and they recommend to change the discs every second set of pads. Their price to do the job was $1100 same as my guy who also supplies a loan car. 2005 TDV6 HSE Silver, LLAMS Height Controller, Tinted Glass, Onroad - 19" GG AT's, Offroad - 18" 275/65 MT, Traxside Dual Battery kit, Rasta Protection Plate, Alpine Roof, BAS Remap, ARB Air Compressor, eDiff Custom Drawer and storage unit -http://www.box.com/s/jem0ilac3cner2mexq64 UHF CB, 4x4 Intellegence RWC, 120ltr Long range tank, Rock Sliders and Compressor protection plate Beanie grill, De Tango.

As Alto for a better price and a loan car. Tell Gary you are from this forum. I am sure they will be flexible. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Check the thickness of your rotors to see if they really do need replacing at this time.
Front Disc Rotor Vented
Diameter, Height, Thickness, Min-Thickness
mm, 317, 62.2, 30, 27
Rear Disc Rotor Vented
Diameter, Height, Thickness, Min-Thickness
mm, 325, 59.6, 20, 17
Which allows for a 3mm reduction in each rotor.

I'm with TDV6 on measurement and condition being the trigger for new disks, I am at 106K, part way through 3rd set of front and 2nd set of rear pads. Disks have lost about 1.5mm each and have not ridged or warped, there is of course a lip developing at the edges. I'll probably replace the disks in pairs rather than all at once and space the expense over the next pad changes, If I am luck I'll wear out a 4th set of front pads before I hit the wear limit and a 3rd set of rears.
Rgds all

At 30,000Km's and last service the dealers are telling me my padds are down to about 30%, so I'm guessing that replacement is not too far away.
Out of interest I had a good search of the DBA web site and they have drilled and slotted rotors available for the Disco3 (street series, gold). It would apppear they will provide much better performance in th wet and under load (fade resistance) than standard rotors (which is why they're use in all race vehicles), but I haven't yet been able to get a price on them. I'd expect to pay more than standard given there is a lot more work goes into producing them - so I'll be keen to compare and will post a price once I obtain one. They are reported to wear between 30 and 50% longer, so that needs to be factored in on price.
Whilst I cannot comment specifically about the Disco, most vehicles have standard pads that are produced to a price - with lower emphasis on performance (stopping power, fade resistance, wear, etc), so I would be surprised if (appropriate) aftermarket pads were not better. Of course I'm sure one could also buy 'K-mart' ones cheaper and get what you pay for:)

I priced the straight ventilated DAB ones and they wanted over $250 “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

as noted above change discs when min thicknesss has been achieved anything else is a waste of $$ and a cash grab by dealers.
if they changed before while discs were with in spec one could have a go at them (dealers) for over servicing.

Hi Rich,
I had all 4 sets of pads changed at about 43k and cost just over $500. (it was about a year ago and I'm sure prices have come down a little since then). The car felt great with a new set of pads, (ie no warping, vibrating or squealing or the like) so I would definitely go that route agian.
The rotors should last the end of the 2nd set of discs but it really depends on what type of driving you do. highway miles = less wear, lots of 4wd'ing = maximum wear due to brakes being applied continuously by the system. What's the point.... it all comes out in the wash anyway!

Mine has 46,000 on the clock and I replaced all pads yesterday and had the rotars machined. Cost $480 and no problems. The front rotars are down to 28.6, so they're about half worn and seems consistent with ALTO's comments that you can get 2 sets pads per set of rotars. Mine were not warped, but certainly had some ridges on the front left. I went with OEM pads in the end, nobody could (or wanted to) source the Ferodo Premium Pads which are 90% OEM spec. TDV6 D3 HSE
