HID Headlight Sticking Upwards

We have just found on our Nov 2006 that our HID Ball headlight appears to stick in the up position. As you are aware when you turn your key, if dark, the HID headlights come on and do a up and down check etc. The lights appear to stay upwards, which is not good with on coming traffic as they think we have our main beam on. If we run over some bumps, the light does then drop down to the correct position. My thought is that there may be some dirt etc in the ball which may be causing the ball not to drop.

Have you come across this problem? What would the fix be? Can I take the unit out and try and clean the ball lens?

All help welcome

Kind regards

John

It's not common problem, but has been reported on here a couple of times. Should be a headlight replacement under warranty. Thumbs Up

I'll run her in and see if they will honnor. I did a little bit more research on the problem. It appears that when I am on full beam, the headlights also go up with the extra full beam lights. When I dip the lights the near side headlight beam stays up unless I run over a bump in the road and light will then drop back to normal.

This is a known fault with some units - it is the shutter sticking over the bulbs.

Unlike normal bulbs, I believe that the Xenons use a mechanical shutter to physically cut off the light when on dipped beams. This can stick, especially if you don't drive too often at nights (my car is on the drive all week whilst I am at work and this has been a pain in the bum for me)

Both my lights went and both replaced no question under warranty

I think you're right with suggesting that infrequent use of the headlamps is a cause. I had the same problem when not using the disco at night regularly. When used more often, the problem dissappears.

I had this on my RRS - there is a little flap inside the deadlight that sticks. Yes you can bodge the fix but it's a warranty repair.

Just for info, I have this issue on both lights on my 8.5 model HSE. Hopefully will be sorted tomorrow.

A warranty replacement or repair will be carried out on that basis only if the vehicle is still under warranty, guess I'm glad mines sorted cos warranty expired last november. Wouldn't want to have to buy a brand new replacement, I understand hundreds of pounds is involved, even a replacement bulb is rather expensive.
