Webasto response on TDV6: additional heater vs. preheater

My TDV6 HSE doesn't even have a menu entry for setting up timer for pre-heating. Dealer here in Moscow (Russia) told me that since 2006 model year LR supplies D3 to our market with this option disabled since it doesn't work anyway.

I gave a call to local Webasto rep. office and they told me that they are aware of the problem (I wonder was that Webasto who developped that heater?! Seems like yes). They said that the situation is exactly the same as with VW Touareg TDi and will be resolved the same way - aditional device will be installed if customer wants it. Price for Touareg is around 500 Euro, they do expect the same price range for D3.

They said that this device is not a replacement of the heater we've got from the factory but the one that will provide timing function to the existing heater (I assume this function should be enabled in settings again).
They expect it to be ready "for the next winter season"...

I think you just about summed it up!

This has been a 'hot' topic since the forum started. Land Rover made the unforgiveable mistake of leaving a function that was not developed or tested in the instrument software of the 2004 and 2005 models, namely a pre heat/pre cool setting in the SETTINGS menu of the vehicle.

At first it was puzzled over and dismissed as a glitch that would be fixed in a software upgrade. Then someone discovered that by leaving the radio switched on, the system could be made to work to a fashion. This got many owners very excited, and Land Rover then put up the barriers, and denied everything. Confusion reigned.

Then a forum member made a very considerable effort to get to the bottom of the issue by dealing with both LR and Webasto, and succeeded in establishing that LR had not developed a timer function at all, and had merely incorporated a supplemental heater to the engine (using a unit that could be used as a pre-heater) With his persuasion and help, Webasto announced that they would release an aftermarket solution.

There have been a few members who have succeeded in implementing timer solutions, but the integrated Land Rover solution as per Range Rover will not appear until the next face lift of discovery 3.

This has to be the number one 'hot' potato on the forum (pun inteneded). If you read the early posts, they are totally pre-heater dominated. Recently it has faded away. By removing it from the software this year, Land Rover have killed the discussion. They have played for this all along, knowing that a solution would not be economically viable to satisfy a relatively small number of users.

All you 2006 model year users are wondering what the hell I'm on about aren't you?

Well, I can leave my radio on, and go out on a snowy frosty morning to a car that is already at toast temperature, and totally defrosted, and drive off with a warm engine. The only probelm is, If I forget to drive off within 30 minutes of firing the heater up, I have no power and a load of warning lamps!

Gareth, great writing, very much appreciated.
I sure did read forums be4 posting mine but it wasn't clear to me what to expect from Webasto...
I will be first in line to buy that "after market" solution since winter is still cold in Russia Laughing

Gareth - I am not sure if it "always" works, but I have found a way round the no power problem - by resetting the timer back half an hour before starting the engine, setting it again, then it seems to "think" the heaters running time is still 23 hours+ away, and it runs fine!! Wink

-7 this morning - worst I've seen for a while - and I think BECAUSE round here we don't tend to get severe frosts, the lack of this feature is not such a problem - my D3 is parked down the side of the house and is actually well protected because of that - I jumped in it this morning and it started without issue (after standing for 5 days too), windows were barely frosted, and a quick jab on the heated seat button and the front windscreen demister had me sorted in less than 2 minutes Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Yes, often if you just try to start up having used the timer, it starts but the pre-heater is "stuck" on & engine revs are jammed at tick-over with no power to go anywhere! However, eg if the timer was set for 07.00 & it is eg 07.25 or 07.35, then each time that I have simply gone back into the Settings Menu & reset the timer back by 15 mins so that it thinks it is now set for 06.45 (the next day), the engine power comes fully on!! NOt guaranteeing it, but it works with mine Very Happy
