D4 predictions

We're ten (10) days away from the D4 revealing at the NY Auto Show. What are your predictions?

My predictions:

- shorter headlights
- taller front bumper (but same approach angle)
- typical silver hex shaped grill (like the RRS / FFRR)
- different LED tail lamps than the ones released in 2008
- no visible yellow in the front, side, or rear lamps - yellow bulbs instead
- bigger nav screen with hood to improve daytime visibility
- larger openings in the moonroof
- "Land Rover" on the bonnet....
Thumbs Up

Although the rear lights and bumper look strangely familiar, I didn't think that was a photoshop. Isn't that the original prototype from way back in 2002?

From DG's link, the general press now seems to be officially calling it a Discovery 4 too....

But it still seems strange for me....4-5 years is a very short period of time to launch a new model - a facelist yes, but a new model name?? Confused .

The shortest time in recent events has been the VW Golf V - generally panned as being boring since it was launched *, VW realised their error and brought forward the design of the Golf VI by several years.

The Golf V was on sale for only 5 years and was replaced quickly to improve poor sales and silence critics.

What I don't understand is why an 'all new' model such as the Discovery 3 is being replaced so quickly too? Has it really had such bad sales? It has won more awards than nearly any other 'car' on the market so why the rush?

Why change from a D3 to a D4? The MY09 additions were nice, but fell short of a proper facelift. From what I can figure out, the D4 changes are just that - a major facelift and new engine/transmission options (nearly all manufacturers make these changes in a model's lifetime without needing to change the model name)...

Can anyone shed any light....I'm just curious why it was seen to be necessary to drop a very competent model so quickly...

Cheers,
Paul

PS. Yes I know I own one but I think it's great Wink

...but a new snippet is that the D4 is getting a new 8 speed ZF box 8)

Is this really such a good thing?

Don't get me wrong, I love the auto-box in my D3....very smooth, but it is still nowhere near as quick as a DSG box when changing gears for the 'seamless' feeling....indeed, the FL2 auto-box is far quicker and feels more direct (even though it's a lot rougher)

If they were just goint to add another high gear to allow effortless and quiet cruising taking advantage of the extra torque of the 3.0 TDV6 then it'd be great, but from what I can see they're going to just slot in some more ratios in between the existing ones...

I'd just be worried that with 8 gears it would be constantly hunting up and down gears on some kind of crazy eco-friendly algorithm...given that the current ZF box is not shall we say 'lightening fast', I wonder how it would drive in the real world?

Just posing a few questions to while away the time whilst we wait for more news... Whistle

Why giving a model name and a number
Personaly either you give a name or a number but not both
If the new model is totaly different then the previous one and you want the old model to be forgotten soon, then give it another name.

Next some clever marketing boy will put the entire VIN on your tailgate.

If they don´t completly change the body then I do not see the point of changing model name.

Marketing boys and beancounters must be panicking.

Apparently the 7 seat Freelander 2 will be called LR3 in the US and to allow it to be fitted into the model naming scheme the D3 becomes LR4 - thus we get Discovery 4.

From what I read anyway.

TBH, does it really matter ? If it was called a Land Rover Doris I would still buy one (and take off the badge Wink )

And the new look is rather good and so is the new interior Whistle

I might be missing something here, but I think calling it Discovery 4 is a smart marketing move. The name isn't actually changing, it's still Discovery, just the number changes. The Series 2 wasn't visually that different from the original disco either. Maybe if they numbered it like software developers it would actually be the Discovery 3.2 (3.1 being the 09MY)

Thumbs Up

(You could take the name off the back and re-arrange the letters to say something else - I suggest 'cosy Drive')

Yep....the EPB is still on Beta version 0.1.7 - still not even close to being a Release Candidate Whistle

No Simon - it doesn't matter - it's just interesting.

The comment about the LR3/LR4 makes sense but I can't see it....you can't replace an LR3 with something cheaper/smaller and give it the same name.

Also, LR3 isn't exactly a 'written in stone throughout history' kind of name but Discovery is. I can't see them screwing up the Discovery line names to pander just to the LR2/3/4 names...

Anyway - if I had the money I'd still buy a Doriscovery 4 Thumbs Up

They can if they want to Wink

Of course the rumoured 7 seat Freelander is still a rumour... so this whole argument may well be completely misleading.

But, hey... whatever its called its looking good and I'm sure will attract a premium price and custom from people who need big but can't quite stretch to the even more premium FFRR when its upgraded.
