LR roof rack - How to remove roof rails? |
|
I bought an RV5 OzTent for an upcoming trip to Morocco, but its 2.6m long and it does not fit underneath the roof rails on the LR roof rack for the D3.
I do not want to tie the tents only on the rails as it will damage the aluminum structure of the tent, unless I put some support along side the tent, however I wanted to ideally have the tent next to the roof floor.
I looked into removing the rails, but there are no bolts, has anyone here done any of that?
Any tips?
Thanks

The OC, Yes you can remove the side rails etc of the expo rack, but only by drilling out the rivets!
Take photo's beforehand so you know where to put them all back
See nodo$h's gallery for pics of a derailed Expo.
I ended up carrying my oz on the roof bars rather than using the rack. Long succession of Disco's since 2001...

Thanks both for the help, let me clarify and make sure drilling out the rivets is the only solution...
What I want to remove are the 2 bars that runs across the top of the side bars (there is one at the very end on the back where a little G4 plaque stands and the other closer to the front...)
Mine has two metal plates that sit above the roofbars, but I dont want to remove those... (which are indeed held by the 3 screws )
I could not find the pics of a derailed Expo at Nodo$h gallery , so I added some pics of my car in my own gallery it might help...on the one with Neil from LRO you can see the long box with the tent and it sits on these 2 bars that I want to remove so they would sit lower at the larger metal plates ...
Thanks!

The rear one you should be able to get off by unscrewing the bolts from the bottum. And the other one I think you have to pull the plastic pieces to the middle to get to the clamping part.
I have never done it but I had a look at the parts you want to remove.
If you don't know what to do with the rear G4 plaque, I am still looking for one. Roel

Thanks Roel, as you said the front ones is a question of sliding the plastic, the only issue is that the bolt is a quite different shape ... will see if the local dealer has it... That part (and the metal plates) are add-ons for the G4s as the original rack does not have them..
The main issue is the rear one, I looked everywhere and they have rivets not bolts on mine. I also looked at the installing diagram and as the part come from LR in one piece I think they put rivets to avoid people taking it out and potentially weakening the structure of the rack...
Thanks for the help and for the rear G4 plaque...I think we have them at the G4OC, will revert to you

All sorted now, removed the front one and manage to put the tent on the diagonal, so no need to remove the rear one!
Thanks all for help! The O.C.
