Landrover whole life environmental effect - any figures?
Afternoon All,
Heavy title I know.
Just had the usual argument with our accountant about how environmentally damaging my Disco is etc and how he drives a Nisaan Note because he cares about the world we are leaving behind for our children.
I put the argument to him that roughly 75% of all LRs ever built are still around as compared to very few small japanese cars over a few years old.
I'm sure the initial build of a car with all the associated components and transport costs thereof would be pretty huge compared to the amount of harm the output of said finished article creates.
Has anyone any figures or are these all a closely guarded secret to keep the car tax market "bouyant?"
Strange question I know but any help appreciated.
Cheers

D3 dust life is 16 years apparently ....compared to a greenfreak motor like the Prius where the batteries are said to only lask 100k before all change 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Cant help with the figures but
1 Discovery3 lasts 16 years (possibly longer) So you will have to buy 4 Nissan ? to cover the same time period of 16 years. So do the math, 4 lots of production costs, 3 lots of disposal costs etc etc.In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.
He just finished the discussion by calling me Jeremy Clarkson. I think I won!! If you aren't living life on the edge, you're taking up too much space!!

I seem to remeber reading it was something like 60-70% of all Land Rover models produced were still on the road My D3 Build Thread
Then again, tell your accountant that there are more pressing matters in the UK, let alone the world, than how many carbons are spat out of your exhaust. As a bean counter, he should understand that.No longer a D3 owner but still subscribed to multiple threads!

I also forgot this article from our next PM, Jeremy Clarkson in last week's Times:
Quote:
And it’s better for the environment too. Yes, you could buy a Toyota Prius, but let’s be honest, the nickel for its batteries is mined in Canada, and shipped — not on a sailing boat, I might add — to Norway or some other intermediate location where it’s processed and then shipped on again to Japan where it is put in the car, along with an electric motor and a normal engine. The finished product is then shipped halfway back round the world again before it arrives in a dealer near you. You may think of it, if you like, as an Israeli strawberry.
A Range Rover, on the other hand, is made in the Midlands, which means, if you buy one, it only has to come down the road. You may think of it, then, as an organic, farm-fresh product, sourced and grown locally. And I know how important that is to shoppers these days.
