is that your D3 in the ditch? Shocked

If it is, your tyres are fairly worn and the tread is not good for those conditions even if brand new......you can't blame LR or LRE for that.

Not much help after the fact but that's the reason I use Land Rover Insurance as they provide proper "offroad use" cover, as does NFU I think. Having seen one of our number hit a tree after coming out of a rut on a steep decent, LR Ins covered it without any drama. Worth the extra if anyone offroads much at all.

Snow plus standard tyres...? Or winter tyres...?

It makes a difference.

Hmmm, looking at the full size images, they look like new tyres, or nearly new to me . . . .. ?

To be fair, RR08 did call to check conditions before travelling, so obviously concerned over ability / conditions. Sounds like good practice to me. When you consider this and the excellent example offered on youtube recently of LR snowdonia instructors demonstrating how to murder a D3 Whistle

So this wasn't the D3 event as that was in January, who organised this one? TBH there are two types of damage, accidental and driver induced, when you join a 'group event' there's no way an instructor (regardless of their own driving ability) can be held responsible if they're not in the vehicle with the driver - and even then the driver is still 'in control' under guidance... That's why the 'proper' LRE or independent training costs much more than the group training events.
Bad luck with the tyre, probably without so much snow the driver would have seen the potential for damage but who's responsible for the weather?

Its still un-nerving for the DISCO3.co.uk forum getting involved in this again. It was'nt one of the forum events, and although sad the car was in the ditch, I certainly agree with TFC here. Road Tyres and snow normally would be ok with due care and attention, but off roading in said tyres is asking alot of the D3 and the drivers skill which where lies the probable problem.

Good luck in your quest, whatever that maybe. Whistle

Hey - I'm not taking sides, but LR do use standard road tyres on the LRE days. All levels Whistle

I was'nt knocking the tyres either, just maybe asking alot of them without an instructor onboard and the skill involved. Not knocking any aspect of the experience, but the error margins are greatly reduced with adverse weather and road tyres.

Yep, LRE use standard tyres, but has been done-to-death before, 'when there is no grip, there is no grip' - regardless of tyre choice, even studded tyres let go at some point, as Ray says, bad judgement or lack of concentration - or just pure bad luck and a liberal helping of 'act of god' would be interesting to know how many vehicles passed that point before the vehicle that ended up in the ditch, what tyres were fitted and if the ditched vehicle took the same or slightly different line....
90BHP - interesting you mention 'taking sides' is there an underlying debate about this? Confused
