The question was asked how do you tell which EGR has failed but I did not see an answer. So how do you tell which one has failed? I appreciate that if one has failed the other will not be far behind but I would prefer to cross that bridge when it happens.
Today I got the check engine light and my scangauge showed error code P0490 - can you tell which one it is from this.
Cheers

you'll get A or B at the end of it if using a proper fault reader (generic readers don't always give the extra info) Bodsys Brake Bible
D4/D3 Remote FBH heat kits
BAS Remaps/ EGR Blank
Transmission Flush
Software updates/enabling
Clock/ SNOTM /3Flash / 4x4Info /BT Update /Service Reset/Error Codes / Gearbox Reset

P0490 is a general EGR error. P0405A or P0405B shows which EGR valve is failing. Bodsys Brake Bible

Ok - thanks for that - before doing anything I am going to fill up with diesel, throw in a double dose of diesel treatment and go for a long drive in Sport mode, driving like it has been stolen and see if that clears it up (hopeful I know) as I am not suffering any performance issues, increased fuel consumption or black smoke - so hoping the EGR is just sticking.
If no change I guess I need to get the codes read (not a cheap exercise) and buy the relevant valve though I expect the other would also be on the way out so just doing the faulty one may be false economy time wise.
It is a shame some boy wonder has not as yet come up with a way to block post 07MY EGRs
Cheers

Disco_Mikey thanks for the excellent idiots guide, just taken both off and waiting for new units.
1964 Landyman, what a great tip. Had a 270 mm flexible drive in the bottom of my toolbox unused for 10 years. Fed it round behind the dipstick and rubber piping and slotted the torx driver through an 8mm ring spanner to guide it into the bolt. 2 minute job even easier than O/S which took about 15 mins.
Many thanks off to buy some new bolts.

I did both yesterday..... what a fun job!
Rather than messing about, I found it easier to take off the EGR valves with the EGR cooler. You have to take a few more bits off but less messing about and struggling to get bolts off!

Great detailed post, thanks a lot. replaced both valves on my euro4 yesterday in about 4 hours, I found once the 30torx is located in the inside screw, leave it there until you have entered screw into the new valve, then use a second tool to do outside one, then tighten inner first. ps still lost one to the sump gaurd gods

Sorry to drag this up but I will
Its only applies to blanking the EGRs and removing the throttle butterfly...
Im not sure removing the throttle butterfly is such a great idea. in the event of engine run away this is used to shut it down along with opening the egr valves and the turbo wastegate vanes.
If the butterfly is removed and the egrs are blanked I doubt the VGT vanes will do anything, should the engine try to run on its own oil.
Any thoughts?

Great write up. Helped me tremendously with changing both EGR valves on my 57 Disco3.
Haggled with local main dealership and got both EGR valves (with the most recent upgrade spec- theres been four upgrades to date); 2 sets new gaskets; 8 new stainless steel M6 22mm lgth, 8mm Hex head bolts for what I thought was a half decent price of £320 incl VAT. Doing the job DIY saved me over £400 on dealerships price to replace.
Did consider blanking, but given tricky of the year of registration and while some MOT stations will turn a blind eye to the engine management light, others just won't! and the possible changes to MOT rules for 'newer' vehicles which will =fail.
Did a 12mile test run before hand where I got a dismal 24.6mpg. And the same run afterwards got 32.2mpg. So very pleased.
If you are going ahead and replacing your EGR valves, I'd strongly recommend using stainless steel bolts. Some of the bolts I removed were badly corroded, and pleased to see them come out without shearing.
Next task strip down the old valves to discover just what has failed. One (LHS) stuck permanently shut, the other open. Both have a rattle on shaking. Any guesses.
Cheers (I owe you a pint!)
David

The little ball bearings that the valve guides run on fall apart, causing the valve to stick. Pretty sure this is what you will also find

A very big thank you for this write up, did both on Saturday, would not have considered doing myself before seeing this.
Near side bit of a pig, I unbolted rear bracket on cooler to enable more movement to get to rear torx.

People have mentioned the blanking kit but have called it a removal kit, question; Can the egr valves be totally removed, made to disappear, poof, gone?
Or are we stuck with the bloody things even if they are blanked off.
....think of the weight saving...
