GPS antenna location ?

Hi,

have anyone had problems with GPS to receive signal trough the windscreen ? My Geosat2c did not find satellites before I located the external antenna into the root. Before that I tried all kind of place in the interior, close to windows and on the desk - without sync.

Could it be that Disco 3's windscreen does not bypass satellite signals ?

I think this is common - the same issue occurred on my previous car - there was a 3 inch square spot up near the mirror which was 'uncoated' and was the only place on the whole windscreen where a GPS antenna could be affixed Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

Its a problem you will see with most heated windscreens... the elements in the glass effectively shield the satellite signal.

TOM TOM's seem to work though as do a number of others, maybe the spacing of the elements prevents certain frequencies getting through... someone technical feel free to step in here Confused

I've got mine in the left hand bottom corner of the screen, and its fine. Heated screens dont usually cause a problem, but film coated ones (like Renault use) do.

Heated windscreens are well documented in portable sat nav manuals too... common issue.

My Mitac Mio 269 works perfectly well anywhere in the front of my D3 and seems unaffected by the heated screen. Regularly get 8 - 10 sats detected. I think the quality of the receivers in portable units varies greatly

I use the TomTom nav s/w in an IPAQ or XDA with the flying lead antenna in the D3 and other cars just slopped on the front somewhere. Never misses a beat ..
..............Somewhere in-between my old D3 and what's to come next .........

GPS aerial

I have Garmin 276C with antenna stuck in centre bottom of windscreen on dash..... perfect through heated screen... no probs at all. Maybe there is an amplification issue with different sorts of aerials.
