To Waxoyl or not to Waxoyl?
I've been offered a £100 off deal on professional waxoiling up to the end of February (which means £373 inc VAT from my previous quote). Can't decide whether its worthwhile. Mine is 54 plate, 50 months old. It's got what I guess most of them have - some surface rust on the usual places underneath. The open ends of the chassis members (i.e the round ones visible when you drop the spare and in the vicinity of the towbar electrics - stuck some kurust on there) are the worst bits. I will definitely have the car for another 3-4 years, but maybe a lot longer. My take is probably not worth bothering if you plan to sell before 10 years old, but on the other hand I could get my money back in resale value and would be glad I had it done it if I keep it for 15+ years. (lots of Disco 1s that old and more still looking good)
Any thoughts?

I did but do wonder whether I'll have it long enough to matter.

Waxoyl
Just do it I think it's great I've got a 24 year old Capri and i waxoyled it from new and its great condition. If i hadn't done it it would be in that great big scrap yard in the sky, with the rest of them.Arctic Frost Discovery 3 TDV6 SE, Active Rear Diff, Adaptive Head Lights, Tow Pack, Ebony Leather, Roof Rails, Mantec Guard. Tasmod Stainless Sill plates. Grabber AT's. Home made mud flaps. Side Steps back on until the next time.
I also had a Capri... X reg 2L Ghia.. was waxoyled from new... when we sold it in 2001 the bodywork was still in brilliant condition.
Don't know how it would work with a 4 year old car but it must help stop the rusting process somewhat. As you slide down the banister of life

Years ago I went to trade this in for a brand new Brooklands 280, £11,001 at the time they only offered me £4000 so decided to keep it.
It's part of the family now and would never sell it. Only thing is I want my private plate off it for the Discovery 3 but I have to MOT Tax and insure it because its been stored more than 3 years now.

Nigel ,
Do mind if I ask what the quote included? Similar to you I have a 51 month old 54 plate and am also thinking about getting mine waxoiled. Having a look underneath there is surface rust on a few of the welds on the chassis and as you describe at the ends. I was also shocked to see how much the rear anti roll bar had rusted where the bushes had rubbed through the powder coat
I would look to get the chassis and underside of body done but am not really interested at this point of having inside of doors done for example. Or should I be?
Hindsight suggests that waxoiling would have been a good idea on my 1980 Escort Mk2 RS2000 that is currently stripped and having the holes in the floor welded at present!
Thanks,
John

yep anything built in Dagenham in the 80's was rubbish bodywise so says the previous owner of an 84 and 86 Escort Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)
I look back at our old Capri with fond affection... the kids loved it and were sorry when it went.As you slide down the banister of life

Find a decent truck fitter who can get the D3 in the air and steam clean it underneath - £15.
Then find a good old fashioned body shop and get them to do it for you - £75
My advice is to get it done every year, perhaps two at the most. Do it in the summer that way you can wash off all the winter salt and also there's sufficient time between cleaning and applying the waxoyl for the underside to dry completely.
I did that on my D2 and it looked like new when I sold it. I got the dealer to do it when I originally bought my D3 almost 18 months ago, and will do it again in the summer.
Don't expect it to add loads more value to the car on resale. Some people will be sceptical that you've just lobbed a load of the stuff on it to cover up serious rust.
The waxoyling that costs £100s of pounds always seems to be caveatted in someway, and it will presumably rub off at some point...

The company is Rustmaster - not sure what they do but takes 5 hours. After asking around a bit more, I've gone off the idea. I'm sure it was worth it on older cars but on a modern design many people think its unnecessary because its the moisture traps designed into older cars that cause the dangerous stuff, not the superficial rust you see on the underside. Also, there is a risk of trapping moisture, however well its done.
I will get the underside steam cleaned though after all this salt on the road.

Oh and another thing - I wouldn't get it done this time of year, even to save £100
