Another LF/Spots wiring question
I've been searching through the thousands of threads to wire my LF170's in, but I don't have answers to these questions....
How can I wire so my switch can be on/off with the main beam (I know that bit) but then I also want the switch to be able to JUST have the spots on. i.e if the engine/lights are off (keys removed) but I want spots on (Spots would be powered from my Aux Battery)
Is it an on- off - on switch I should be looking at with two seperately wired relays?
I did see a post the other day with something (I think) that would be similar but I'm if I can find it again now...
Additionally, I've been trying to find what wire to use for the main power/earth, seems I might need 25amp capacity? 2x100w?
So this http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?Module...p;doy=15m1 or is that overkill and I can drop a size?
The wiring to the switch and relay, what's the thinnest I can use (as I assume it has relatively low current draw?

OK, so managed to get the formula, for my 2x100w lamps /12v - 16.6amps, so I can drop a wire size and go for the 20amp cable. the high power run shouldn't be too long as the relay shoudl trigger it on.
Still need to work out how I can have on/off with main beam as well as on directly and independantly.....Bodsys Brake Bible

Bodsy,
my roof light are wired so they come on only when ignition is on. I have a 3 way switch so they can 1) come on with main beam 2) come on on there own (providing side lights are on) or 3) switched off completely.
I cant explain how its done but you can take a look when we go to snowdonia Duncan

2 seperate relays, one to be switched with main beam when your 1st switch is on, and one powered solely from the second battery when you flick the 2nd switch. As Dunc says, a 3 position switch would be best. Off in centre, up for with high beam, down for aux batt.Disco 5 HSE Lux

ON - OFF - ON switch required and one relay can't work out how to post the diagram on here if you want it pm me your e-mail address"Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag'em down to your level. It's cheaper".

You only need 1 relay as long as you intend to have them powered from the aux battery only. You just need to run permanent (ie not switched by IGN) 12v through a dash switch and to the coil of the relay - to the same terminal that the main beam power is wired to. It will need a diode to isolate the vehicle main beam circuit when you just want the LFs on without the ignition.

hi ian, pop over on the saturday if you like. we should be at my parents around lunch time
I have an ON-OFF-ON switch and two relays. I think one for the ignition and the other for the side light / main beam setup but as i didnt wire it up i'm not totally sure. its easy to trace the wires though.Duncan

Thanks RBM, would the 3a be sufficient as it's only switching the relay or I should get one of the higher rated ones?
Dunc I'll give you a call on the Saturday to arrange.
