On Off On set-up with one relay (by UNG)
I can see how this would work, without the need for a diode as it wouldn't cross connect.
Live feed to the spotlights (switched through the relay) would be fused 25A from the Aux Battery. Another live feed off of that would go to On1 of the on off on switch. This will give me independant illumination with or without ign on.
Then the live wire from the main beam wire would go to On2 of the on off on switch. This will then give me additional illumination with main beam lights. This would also work independant from the ignition (I assume the main beam works even if ign is switched off i.e. if you flash someone).
Then if I don't want it on at all, it is just left to the off position.
No danger of running main battery down as it will all be powered from Aux.
Excellent, thank you chaps, I think I have it clear in my head now.
Just need to mount them, but I've been looking at the way ChrisTyler did his in the grill. Just need to measure up the 170's and get hold of a 2nd hand grill to try it with Bodsys Brake Bible
Yes, that's a neater solution and it gives you the legal requirement to be able to turn them off Previously:

Thanks to Tanters, I'll have hold of another grill to play with soon.
Just need Christylers measurements for the mounting plate he made for his lights...
I've been desperately searching and can't seem to find the post he did when he installed his lights. have the pics in his gallery, but not the extra info I remember he provided (or maybe that was when I spoke to him..) Oh well, he'll be in Snowdon too so i'm sure I can take a peek

Bods , can you make up a diagram of that

You only need to separate the feed to the relay contact and the switch in my diagram to achieve what Bodsy is doing"Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag'em down to your level. It's cheaper".

it is worth considering a feed from the ignition. Simply to prevent the LFs draining the aux batt.
Mine all run off the main battery (simply because they were fitted before i had the aux batt installed) and if i turn the ignition on without running the engine, then turn on all lights.... the battery is incapable of starting the engine after about 30 seconds
I know yours will run from the Aux batt but worth a thought if only to ensure the aux batt does go flat and then your fridge will warm up the beer... and you wouldnt want that Duncan

If you use an ignition feed, I would run ignition to relay, then use relay to connect +12 from aux to switch or lights as you choose.
If you just take ignition feed and start using it on relays... it should be ok... but if you get it wrong you can end up powering ignition backwards through your wiring, which is NOT what you want
(don't ask how I know, its a long time ago and I forget the details but I remember that its important )

I had considered that Duncan, and for my application, I'd generally be happy that if the power gets low, then I'd have the main battery to start the car with.
It would take about 3 hours for 200w to drain the Aux battery (roughly) I reckon.
Would only really need it for Scout nights in a field & other times I might need light but not keep runing the engine.
All other times it would be off or only on with the main beam, so minimal drain.
If I didn't have the Aux, then yes, I would definately link it to the Ign on signal (via relay) Bodsys Brake Bible

Better yet, just use a relay with integrated diode across the coil to protect from voltage spikes and current reversals into the vehicle systems.

Problem with using an ign supply it means that the key needs to be in the ign to use the lights therefore if you are not sat in the vehicle some scumbag oppertunist might relieve you of your pride and joy and the insurance company walks away and leaves you with the problem"Never keep up with the Joneses. Drag'em down to your level. It's cheaper".

Also, what he said.
You can buy relays with the diode in them these days, I just soldered one from Maplin on myself, although I could not tell you what it was off the top of my head.
