Compressor + Jack + Idiot - Help Please ! |
|
All,
I have checked others' posts on the dreaded jacking up the compressor but I have stupidly managed to do a slight variation.
Last w/end was time to put the S/Ts on. When jacking up the rear nearside wheel the jack slipped but just on to the end of the pastic cover, but crushed and broke it.
I removed the cover (many thanks DG and Discodunc for all your photos and guidance ) . I brushed out the mud ( nothing compared to some on here , I must try harder ) . Whilst the end of the plastic cover is snappped all else seems as it should - no small white balls , the bracket - alloy - holding the compressor unit is fine , no damage surface or otherwise on anything under the cover that I can see.
Also the height raising/lowering is as normal .
However the compressor is noisy - onheight increase this lasts for just over a minute. Once fully up it stops. The noise is quite a loud whirring sound.
So - advice please - what have I damaged - if anything ?
I am about to drive up to Scotland ( from London ) and do not want to get stranded ( especially when off road ! )
Many thanks
John

Check that the reamins of the cover is not touching the compressor anywhere. The compressor is rubber mounted to isolate its vibration from the car. If the cover touches it, or if the compressor has a broken mounting and is touching the chassis, noise will be heard in the car.

You can repair the cover with a soldering iron and black film canister (plastic welding) dropped the D3 onto a rock when stopped. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

with the lower cover off, it will be louder than before, also as has been pointed out, if the upper or lower cover is deformed this will transmit vibration (and noise) to the chassis. running for 60-90 seconds is within the 'normal' range of operation

Thanks all of you for your help, much appreciated. Will remove bottom cover and test. I have a feeling the top cover is loose.

Get them to pay to have it fixed. Get a quote for repair from dealer. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€
