Ok DW, I'll add Marcon to the spreadsheet, but please tell him to also register as I use the "PM All Registered" button to notify all buyers at the same time and if you're not registered you might miss out on an important message Wink

My thanks also to TFC for getting hold of Rescue01 and confirming he still wants the rope Thumbs Up

How good are these for just simply towing a car as opposed to rescuing Discoverys?!?

Also whats the legal limit on length of tow rope? I'm just thinking the 5m length seems ideal for off road recovery/on road towing.

Thumbs Up

That's what I'm using the 5m one for - only intend to take the 10m on off-roading trips. As to the legal minimum, sorry don't have a scooby, but I'm sure someone on here will come along and tell us Wink

Andy, I think you'll find that most products sold as tow ropes or webbing tow bands (for normal on road towing) are 4.5m in length. Each product's maximum breaking strain will of course vary.

MachineMart have 2 products that you could look at. Both sell at £8.99 + VAT and either would be ok for non Discovery towing on road.

Their tow rope has a 2 tonne bs and their web towing band a bs of 5 tonnes. Both products come with reinforced eyes and hooks or shackles. I've towed many Discovery 1s with the web towing band.

Worth a look

Andy - I have 4 meter tow rope that has an 3 ton breaking strain (IIRC) that cost about 14 euro. And has proven itself to be good enough for on-road towing.
The next American ex-pat that calls it a "truck" is going to find out what 2.7 tons feels like on their foot...

Club "yes, I too have had the EGR's replaced..."
Club "yes, I too have had the compressor replaced..."
Club "yes, I too once had the car at the dealer for a couple of weeks nearly 4 weeks over 4 weeks...5 weeks"
Club "yes, I too have had EPB failure..."
Club "yes, I too get mysterious bings and bongs..."

Alternatively - for a suitable donation to the site you could have my old heavy-duty tow rope I currently have, you'll just need some shackles to go with it.

Doesn't have the 10% stretch properties or hooks like these new ropes have though.

thanks for the info guys, I like the rope MrH has got hold of I just wanted to make sure that it would be suitable for both towing and off road recovery etc.

I'd rather have one rope that can do everything as opposed to one for off road, one for towing cars etc

Thumbs Up

been discussed before, if an on road tow rope is over 4.5 metres it needs a visible marker at it's centre point, if over 9 metres, it needs a marker with spacing at no more than 4.5 metres apart - or something like that Wink

For Those with 5m Rope Requests

That begs the question, rather than making the shortest 5m long, shall I ask them to make them 4.5m long as I'm fairly sure they won't come with a marker flag - You guys with orders for 5m ropes let me know soonest as I may be going to an office near the suppliers today and was thinking of placing the order at Lunctime.

Right just had a chat with the suppliers and it sounds like they'll put some sort of marker on the middle of the 5m rope - I'll discuss with them detail when I get there and I don't believe they'll be any costs involved either.

Just been to see them and placed the order for 37 ropes Shocked. Tony, the poor guy you makes the ropes up (braids the ends etc) nearly fell of his chair when Andrea asked how long it would take him to complete 37 ropes Laughing

He reckoned 7 days, but to be safe we agreed 7-10 incase they didn't have all the material ex-stock. They will call me as soon as they're ready and either I or SWMBO will go collect them.

All ropes will have an orange or yellow marker sleeve on them - apparently they automatically fit them to anything over 4.5m long, so we needn't have been concerned.

Those 6 of you who are having them couriered, sorry but I'm no wiser because they didn't have any ropes of similar length and makeup that I could weight/measure. Therefore, if you haven't already sent me an extra £12, I'm not worried we can sort out the payment of the carriage charges once I have the ropes and can confirm the exact P&P prices.

And yes AndyChelt your rope is included in the order despite you not having registered above Whistle
