The auto box is adaptive, it will learn your driving style so you can 'sort of train it' using command shift, over a period of time it will change sooner, originally mine used to change into 6th at about 60mph, it now changes at about 52 ish and doesn't change down to 5th until 40mph.I'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.

bought mine s/h so the previous owner 'adapted' it I guess
mine's crap at changing gears - how do you get it 'reset' so it can learn your driving?
must be some way to do it

AFAIK it works on a 150 cycle so should have learned your style by now, but I may be wrong!

Our D3 gearbox has always been superb, even with two drivers using it regularly. I had a problem with an irritable gearbox on my Merc so I took it to the dealer. They gave it a good talking to and it's now much better, albeit still nowhere near as good as the D3. Maybe a LR dealer can do the same for you, TazDaz. A misbehaving gearbox can really spoil the drive.

I just tell mine in a stern voice that it is the same 'box they put in Bentleys and to behave itself!
Actually, it was probably a wee bit bored. Since the re-map it hasn't put a cog wrong 2006 D3 finally swapped for a 2016 D4 Graphite in Graphite grey. No mods

Well I've tried driving it in 'command shift' for a couple of weeks, making gear changes (especially into sixth) under 60mph and it hasn't 'learned' it at all. I don't get into sixth until nearly 70mph unless I slip it into manual.

Thanks for replies, I guessed the adaptive box did as it suggests and adapts to my style, however I cannot get it to change into 6th before 50mph, probably 52 as mentioned elsewhere.unfortunately there are loads of 50mph limits near me.Thats why I was wondering if there was another method of making the box change earlier.

You wont get it to change into 6th below 50 automatically. If you put it into command shift you can change it at around 45 yourself Global Warming.... I'm luvvin it
6th gear in thauto is very high though, I have found that anything but a slight down hill or at least a very flat road and the engine labours @ 50mphI'm not as good as I once was........but I'm as good once as I ever was.
