Don’t know answers but my thoughts
Rear facing, horse is unable to brace itself under braking loads which may be higher due to idiotic drivers wanting your braking distance
Side facing, preferred way in hgv vehicles but small trailers is there enough support for the horse
Platform above wheels, not horsy so don’t see many horse trailers, the ones I do have the floor between the wheels, in effect lowering the CofG, can’t imagine the problems of a short high trailer with all the weight at the top even static loads then add a moving load?
We do a lot of trailer training these days and you would be surprised at the low level of driver skills used on our roads, the horse brigade at the stables pipes up we can save you money by showing you how to tow / reverse. Of course they know more about it than our trainers, so much easier with a clean mind.
Most people fail there tests on the road drive section rather than the reversing as the examiner expects a more Proffesional driver with experience and judgmentDiscovery 3 HSE 07

Tow hitch height
