Hello all
I`ve just checked the oil level and found that i need to add some, but the owners manual is at home. Could someone please advise as to Make / Specification as i would like to get some on the way home.
Also is it my imagination or am i dreaming but i thought the other day when i dimmed the dash lights that the sat nav screen dimmed as well, but now it does`nt

5w 30 oil, I use land Rover branded oil, from any dealer. Be careful, it does not take much to over fill it! 1 litre will be enough.
The sat nav brightness is attached to the instrument cluster, but does have a mind of its own, and can take a few minutes to react. It also adjusts to ambient light. If you shine a torch at the bottom of the rev counter with the sat nav on, you will see the screen react.

I shall collect some on the way home, and try a torch on the dash. Nice to know im not going mad as i thought it did dimm the other day.

I think you also have to ensure that it is synthetic?, and I have heard opinions that it is best to not mix different brands!

Factory oil is not synthetic. I think it's Castrol GTX.

I think you will find in the UK it is synthetic for the diesels at least.

The green bottled oil with Land Rover 5w 30on the side says "especially suited to the TDV6 engine as fitted in the Discovery 3 and RRS" (or words to that effect) on the label.
I got really Pi**ed with the dealer when I found out it was ok to use it after they charged me 85 quid for engine oil at a service! They told me it was the same stuff, at half the price

I guess that's possible. Does this mean the "Land Rover" branded oil I've seen mentioned is 100% synthetic? For regular service (which is covered in North America), our dealers locally definitely don't use synthetic oil for petrol engines. Anyway, it doesn't matter... as long as it's up to specification.
The UK manual:
Engine oil - Petrol vehicles
- Use a 5W/30 oil meeting specification ACEA:
- A1 or A3, or API, SJ, SL, or SM.
- Land Rover WSS-M2C913-B preferred.
Engine oil - Diesel vehicles
- Use 5W/30 oil meeting ACEA: B1 or B3.

Grommet,
I asked my LR Dealer for Synthetic and they filled me up with Valvoline 5w-40. Cost a few dollars more of course!
