Thanks for all the responses guys. A few comments to make it clearer.

There was no way I could steer down the slope as convention teaches - you can't steer down a ravine! The problem was mostly the slippery side slope and the lack of sideways traction. Although the angle was very bad (and improved significantly after we had dug under the wheels and allowed the centre of gravity to come back a little), the more serious issue was the vehicle sliding off the edge and then rolling, rather than rolling first. The wheels down the slope were not hooking up on anything so it was more a case of the vehicle simply sliding off the edge sideways.

Thanks to all the well wishers! I am extremely relieved that no body was hurt. It was an amazing predicament; either I lost the D3 completely, or it was perfect with not a scratch. Very strange, very brown trouser inducing.

Thanks for sharing with us, Andrew Thumbs Up

Scary stuff Shocked

Hats off to you for realising the situation and, after re-assessing taking it slowly and calling for help. Adrenalin is a funny thing - sometimes good, sometimes bad.

I stopped next to an accident scene recently where a car had overturned on the free-way. A bakkie full of workers also stopped and they decided the best thing to do is to upright the vehicle immediately - with the 2 occupants inside ! Luckily they were not seriously injured, but the action of moving the vehicle with people inside could have caused injuries or worsened an already serious injury Big Cry

On a lighter note - while doing my scuba diving course the favourite joke was : What is adrenalin?.......... it is that brown stuff that runs out of your wet suit after seeing a shark up close for the first time Rolling with laughter

Andrew - all I can say is "Eish!"

These are the situations that you remember - its all good, cos it makes you a safer driver. I think you did what anyone would have done in the sitiuation. Kudos to the man in the Isuzu!

Thanks Deondef and Baben.

Ja I k Censored kked myself and was very Embarassed to have got myself into that situation to start with, but I am very grateful for the experience. I paid Willie for his services, but it was still a very cheap, advanced 4x4 course!!

Glad you are all Ok. Isn't 4x4ing fun Shocked Whistle Rolling with laughter Big Cry Thumbs Up

You should have pulled the TC fuse out of the D2. I bet it kept stalling.

As already said and its easy to say now get out and check your route first.

It just goes to show how quick things can and do get very dangerous. We all become complacent at times and stories like this hit home and hopefully tomorrow we will all be that extra bit cautious. Thumbs Up
