theres only so long that a consumer driven economy thats not actually making anything can survive, as folks who work in one shop buy from somebody else in another, with the actual goods coming from outside the UK, all fueled on borrowed money - its going to break at some point (like now).
I sort of agree with out of control lending and borrowing, but quite a few of us have jobs that are target driven, and if your boss says, here's a big bonus for meeting a goal, do we complain, or do we just go for the goal. A lot of folks within the finance industry have had fiscal objectives that have fueled this, and therefore have been paid for meeting those goals, without ever considering the consequences (and why would they at the time). If your a mortgage salesman, you dont say "I'm not selling this cause they cant really afford it, and it'll lead to the credit crunch" however moraly incorrect this may be.

surely the people who haven't borrowed are not in a bad position then as they have nothing to pay back
i'm have always been of the opinion that if you want to work, there is always work out there, granted it may not support your current lifestyle, but that is where you should of either saved enough to get through this, or found some skills to allow you to be the best at what you do.
people who are the best at what they do, provide a unique service or both will rarely find themselves in trouble unless they're particually stupid.

It's refreshing that for once the BBC has not blamed 4X4 drivers or more specifically Land Rover.

Free food, free fuel, free heating..... Where do I sign?
Not that simple Alex, not that simple. Wish it were though I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.
