Ability to ignore threads

Is there any way to mask or mark as read whole threads or sub-forums?
I'm sure they're great but I can't read Italian / French / Dutch / crap so ideally i'd like them not to come up on the 'new posts' list....

On a similar theme.
On other forums i am a member of, when you roll your cursor over the thread title in the main list a bubble appears showing the text of the first post so you don't have to open it if you're not interested in it.
Can this be done here? Just a thought.
