fumes in the cabin at idle
dear all,
I need some advice, I have a d3 tdv6 se in australia, 2 weeks old 06 model and I have noticed a peculiar smell in the cabin when the car comes to a halt at traffic lights,
it happens only when the A/C in on and is not in recirc mode. I have spoken to my local landie dealer mechanic who says all landrovers smell like that.
Has anyone had the same experience?
Am I paranoid?
Is it diseal fumes?

The answer is no, your not paraniod and it should not smell. The only time I can imagine that fumes 'may' enter the car (unless the doors are open) and it would not apply to Australia is from the pre heater.

Unless the FBH is operating incorrectly. Next time it does it, have a good sniff in front of the left front wheel and see what the result is - that way you can rule the FBH in or out of the equation.

if it is the preheater then why should the odor occur only when the A/C is on?

Because it is sucking in air from the outside.
However the FBH fumes have a very distinctive smell and you'll get a strong odour from the exhaust outlet which is in front of the front leftside wheel.
Clearly, it shouldn't be operating during an Australian summer......

The Fuel Burning Heater kicks in when the engine and outside temp are cold... aids speeding up engine warm up and getting hot air out of the heaters.
On Diesel engines only. If your in Australia I would imagine this is never needed unless you get a very cold night.
The AC will draw the smell in unless you have switched off the system with the 'off button' - its on all the time by default.
The exhaust for the FBH is in the right side wheel arch (as you look at the front of the D3) and can be seen as a metal tube tucked behind the plastic cladding.
It could be working in error and as said above a sniff around the right front wheel arch will confirm if its in operation - in private of course as the general public will start to worry about you

First we need to establish if a FBH is fitted. Simon has posted a picture and it is the unit at the front right. A silver looking box. I must say, I didn't think the Australian cars had one, but I stand correcting.

There can always be the odd one though Pelyma, so we need to ascertain if one is fitted anyway. It may even be some sort of import, because I believe New Zealand have FBH's.

I have had experience of a smell of fumes in the car when driving along. This started one cold evening,about 10 day ago, when I was reversing up a steep driveway with my window down. A strong smell of rotten eggs entered the car. This eventually cleared however ever since there are times, even when driving along, that a gas/fume smell is apparant in the cabin.
The car is due its first service near the end of the month and I will be asking the dealer to investigate. Have any others had such a problem on diesel cars.
