You CAN just replace them, but whilst you've got it all up in the air, it doesn't take too much longer to get it adjusted as well Bodsys Brake Bible

It is a good idea I think to adjust them if you have the wheels off anyway. It could save you a screamer.
If you go in the mud sometimes Clean the EPB ad the same time. That takes a little longer but you are probably not going to change the pads every week, so better spent a little more time on it. Roel

Just been reading up on this very helpful string before I change pads and discs in all 4 corners... tell me, do I need to touch the EPB if I'm just replacing the pads and discs .... I havent had any problems with the EPB and don't like the sound of it .....

If your changing the rear discs, the EPB will need to be adjusted I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

Hi
Can someone please clarify a couple of points:
1 I have a screamer!! I presume the EPB needs adjusting. How can I tell if the pads need replacing - or if it is just an adjustment?
2 Do the discs need to come off? I'm presuming not - but would appreciate clarification.
3 If it is just an adjustment - do I then need to do the bedding in - or is this only if pads replaced?
Many thanks D4 XS MY12 Galway

1. Yes, SHOULD only need adjusting if you do it early enough after the first scream.
EPB is by drum brake, so have shoes instead of pads. only way to tell if they are worn (or how worn they are) is to remove the rear disks.
If you're on about normal brake pads, then that is easy wince the wheel is removed (but will make no difference to your EPB screamer)
2. Not for adjustment, but yes if you are changing or clearing them out fully
3. If adjusting only, then althouigh I DID do it, I probably wouldn't bother next time (although I suspect they'll be replaced next time, so will.....)

Hi
My front and rear pads need replacing so I bought some of the interwebs (plus sensor cables) as my local dealer quoted me way too much. I have all the necessary tools and I'm confident I'll be able to do it myself as I've done this before on other cars, but being new to this on the D3 (and forgive the noob question don't laugh!) I wondered where I should put the axle stands exactly? I just want to make sure I am resting the weight of the car in the right place
Thanks in advance

Coming from (much) older cars to this great site, when changing pads, isn't it also necessary to change the brake fluid also or do the brakes not need to be bled?
Having just picked up my D3 I'm keen to do the job but just wanted to check.
Great site, by the way. Looking forward to learning about the car and attending a meet if there are any in the SE.
