What is an HSE?

Well, the question is largely rhetorical.

However, when I was in Scotland before Christmas, I picked up copies of the Disco3 brochure and pricelist. I was surprised to find that the HSE configuration described in these is completely different from the HSE I have ordered here. Although I had understood that there could be differences in models delivered in various markets, I had imagined that an HSE was an HSE was an HSE, with any changes restricted to minor matters (like making the shape of the rear lights comply with local regulations, for example). However, while a British HSE is a very complete package, the German HSE is much more basic and the buyer has to add a long list of extras to make it equivalent to the UK version. Mind you, we get the mud-flaps thrown in, that you don’t – whoopee!. And I suppose the German method is more flexible.

Of course, when I saw the number of extras I would have to order to get a “real” HSE, my first thought was that I was being ripped off. However, once I had done the sums as in the table below, I found that the difference isn’t really all that much, £36,920 in Britain compared to £37,958 in Germany (assuming €1,45 to the pound). The price difference seems reasonable enough to me and within the limits one might expect from exchange rate fluctuations (if you Brits had the Euro the comparison would have been easier - but that's another story Twisted Evil ).

Since I thought that other potential buyers in Germany, and maybe elsewhere outside Britain, could be confused when people talk about an HSE in the forum, here are the calculations, as I made them.

The prices are given without VAT/Mehrwertsteuer. An entry of 0,00 indicates a feature which is provided as standard.

I couldn’t find anything in the German brochures corresponding to the ‘Load space cover –parcel shelf’, so I used the British price. What is this?

(Despite sweating over this table, the forum software still swallows all multiple spaces, as I've complained before Sad Sorry! The three price columns are UK price in £, German price in £ and Euro.)

Well, if you folks back home would pull the finger out and work a bit harder, then maybe I could even feel I’d made a profit on the deal, if the pound gets a bit stronger again before I have to pay for the car Laughing . My car, as I have ordered it here, is pretty well the British HSE specification but without the Alpine roof, 19 inch wheels, cooler box and front PDC (or the mysterious load space cover).

But don’t work too hard – Happy New Year!

Eric

Nice one Eric. This has come up in the past but I don't think anyone else has gone into such detail.

Basically the UK spec models are all singing and dancing compared with most of the rest of the world which has to add bits to make them up to the same spec, and why not - they make them over here, they rip us off on anything and everything, so they only sell them fully loaded to make us feel better Rolling Eyes

Was that from Hogmanay, TFC, or the botched up table? Sorry about that!

Eric, I've found a way to keep the spaces correctly, and have edited your table accordingly Smile You're right though, it is a labour of love Wink

The
and
tags around a block of text will keep the formatting but uses a fixed width font, so that the spaces you type come out the same width as a letter... But it works!

Many thanks for your help, Martin.

I had wondered about uploading the Excel spreadsheet I did the calculations in but hadn't the nerve to try it!

Belgium

I have just gone through the same excercise comparing the price and spec here in Belgium against the spec/price in UK, With BTW (VAT) at 21% and higher car tax in Belgium I have opted to get a left hand drive one built to UK spec and use it in the UK for a year or so Whistle then personal export it to Belgium there by making the final bill slightly easier on my pocket Thumbs Up Roll on the 3rd week in Sept.

HSE

Maybe HSE means High Sodding Expense....'cos they are
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Just bought an used French HSE, first Carte Gris end of 2006.
Does anybody has any idea on where can I find the list of all the option included with the HSE at that time?

Thanks
